“How we treat our land, how we build upon it, how we act towards our air and water, in the long run, will tell what kind of people we really are.”

🌿 Transforming School Landscapes
with Ecological Land Care

Biodiversity loss, climate change, and exposure to toxic chemicals are some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. But there’s good news: schools all over the world are discovering that their grounds can be a key part of the solution.

The Green Schools Alliance, in partnership with Perfect Earth Project, invites you to an inspiring and practical webinar on how schools can transform their outdoor spaces into safe, sustainable, and vibrant landscapes—without the use of toxic chemicals.

Featuring: Edwina von Gal, renowned landscape designer and founder of the Perfect Earth Project, who advocates for toxin-free, nature-based landscaping.

  • Where: Live online webinar (Zoom link provided upon registration)

  • When: Thursday, April 24 at 4:00 PM ET

Who Should Attend: Sustainability Coordinators, Facilities Managers, Educators, School Leadership, Students involved in environmental or garden clubs, and anyone interested in creating healthier school environments!

💡 What You’ll Learn:

  • How to make your school landscape safer and more vibrant—without harmful chemicals

  • The risks of conventional landscaping on human and environmental health

  • Common challenges in going greener—and how to overcome them

  • The wide-ranging benefits of ecological land care for learning, community, and climate

🚀 What Happens After the Webinar?

  •  Be guided to create goals for your own school landscape

  • Have an opportunity to meet again for a follow-up with Edwina with your questions.

🌱 Why This Matters:

  • Children are especially vulnerable to pesticide exposure; many synthetic lawn chemicals are linked to cancer, respiratory issues, and neurodevelopmental harm. (Source: EPA)

  • Green schoolyards are linked to better academic performance and reduced stress levels in students. (Source: American Geophysical Union)

  • Landscaping choices directly impact biodiversity and climate resilience. Since 1970, monitored wildlife populations have declined by approximately 69%. (Source: World Wildlife Fund) Schools have an opportunity to reverse environmental damage right on their grounds.

🌱 This webinar can help your school to implement an important START Metric for Whole School Sustainability!

#40 Grounds Management: Managing school grounds in ways that protect and promote environmental health and biodiversity, for example through Integrated Pest Management and sustainable land care.

Find additional resources for this metric in the GSA Community: #40: Grounds Management.

Your support enables us to continue our work in developing tools and programs that empower schools and students to make measurable change for a more sustainable, regenerative and climate-resilient future.
