Hey there,

Is Oalug still doing anything? It looks pretty dormant from everything that I've looked at.

Thanks!

At least the email list is still functioning.  I'd be open to help getting things active.

I would also be open to helping getting things active. I helped resurrect and run my university’s Linux club a few years back, so this wouldn’t be overly new to me.

Did you have an idea of how you wanted to go about getting started?

Please forgive the necroposting. Any luck on getting things off the ground?

Been low key getting a couple boxes up and running, one Ubuntu on bare metal, and one virtual Arch. Being still relatively new to the scene, it'd be nice to have some local peer support.

Short answer is no, but I am committing to trying to change that.

Long answer is that I’ve been floating the idea of reviving OALUG by co-workers and anyone else who I know that might be interested in what a LUG has to offer and I think that there is enough interest, and frankly a need in some cases, for this kind of group in the area. My conclusion from these interactions is that it is worth trying to put on some meetings.

Here’s my plan: I’ll take care of finding a location where we can meet (previously it looks like there were some meetings at a public library in South Ogden. If anyone has any other ideas, let me know). I’ll also commit to doing the first presentation, probably something on self hosting your own LLM.

After that, I’m going to be looking to other people to volunteer to give presentations. Topics should be loosely Linux or open source based. So long as we have people willing to present, I’m happy to help facilitate the meetings, no more than once a month, but depending on the levels of participation, the time between meetings may need to be longer. In other words, this thing is going to live and die by word of mouth. So tell your friends!

As for a time frame, I’m juggling a few things at the moment, so it may be a few weeks before I can provide any concrete details. As soon as I have more information, I’ll post the details on this thread. And if anyone wants to offer a helping hand, I will not turn down the help :)

Libraries usually have rooms you can reserve.  South Ogden is about as far as I'd want to travel. I'm in Brigham City so am open to further north.

I've recently setup Home Assistant and could demo that or various related integrations.

In the past we have booked the county library in Roy.

I believe the critera was to have it free (Easy!) and a published notice.
I think someone still has oalug.com? Maybe that is Seth?

I have the twitter account and would be happy to push out a notice on it.

I'm also north of Ogden so naturally prefer something further north.

If I can help, feel free to ask. :)

Yup! I've still got the .com and the GitHub org that it points to. I'm still subbed to the list and happy to help with any logistics, but I'm down in Utah County these days. (Possibly moving back north later this year. Here's hoping.)

FWIW, the Roy library was nice due to easy-ish egress/ingress from I-15 and I-84, and the librarians were easy to work with (but strict about scheduling in advance).

Thanks for the input, and the offers; I'll keep all of them in mind, especially David's offer to present.

As for libraries, I live close to Roy, so that is appealing to me. However, one of my co-workers is currently doing a master's at Weber State and a professor he is taking a class with has expressed interest in OALUG for his students and offered to help set up a meeting place at Weber State facilities. Unfortunately, the professor only teaches at the Davis campus (just south of HAFB), which is a little further south than what I gather OALUG has traditionally been. I've been told Weber is building a new comp sci building at their Ogden campus and it makes me optimistic that with some networking, OALUG may be able to use Weber State: Ogden's facilities in the future.

I'm partial to this option because having a LUG attached to a school or any other large technical institution ensures a constantly refreshing population for new LUG attendees that we can advertise to. I've personally seen this approach succeed with the Provo LUG (PLUG) being attached to UVU and back when I ran the BYU campus Linux Club. I also have a neighbor that works in the technical education group at HAFB, and he has said that a number of the base employees they work with wish there were better Linux educational resources they could tap into. I'm still going to investigate all of our different options, but on paper, affiliating OALUG with Weber State and advertising it on HAFB would give OALUG a serious boost from the get-go.

As always, I'm open to feedback! And I'm happy to see interest from the old membership!

Hello everyone! I work at WSU and if we are interested, I could ask around to see if there are professors interested in sponsoring a Linux club at the Ogden campus.

Just let me know!

I already reached out to a professor in the CS department that was recommended to me about a week ago, however I have yet to hear anything back. At this point I won’t turn down getting any help with making contacts at WSU.

In the meantime, I have scouted out the Roy library and I think it will suffice, so long as we are under 20 people. My goal for this week is to get a meeting on the calendar.  I’ll let y’all know what date we can get, but personally I am aiming for no sooner than the end of March.

It’s official: we’re having a meeting!

Date and time: April 10th, 2025 @ 6:30-8
Thursday, Apr 10 · 6:30–8 PM
View details & RSVP
OALUG Hosting your own ChatGPT

Location: Weber County Southwest branch Library in Roy. Meeting will be in the board room.  https://maps.app.goo.gl/fh4ui5HB89KRoSjx9?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy

Topic and presenter: Running a personal and private ChatGPT at home by Clayton Ramstedt

Other notes: The room I got has space for 20 people. Hopefully that is enough, but if not, I don’t think that is a bad thing. Remember, these meet ups are going to live and die by word of mouth, so tell your friends! The library does have an auditorium, so there is plenty of room to grow at this location.

Also to be transparent, it does cost ~$14 to reserve this room, and if we bring food and drink it is another $10 in clean up fees. It’s cheap enough that I’ll happily cover the costs now and in the future, but at least for this first meeting, please refrain from bring any food or drinks (beyond water). If OALUG becomes a more consistent thing in the future, I will be open to allowing food.

Let me know if you have any questions, and I’m really excited to meet y’all!

Here’s one last reminder to everyone that our first meeting is tomorrow! You can see my previous message for details, but I did want to add one thing:

When you enter the library’s front entrance, turn left, walk a couple dozen feet down that hall, and on the left wall there will be two conference rooms. We are in the one furthest down the hallway.

I hope the meeting went well.

As promised, here is the link to the slides from tonights presentation: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/10X1tyIbCaveRowd1ce-J0neNfR5vtPb-0Io5u6oEEVQ/edit?usp=sharing

We had 13 people, including myself, in attendance tonight, which blew my expectations out of the water. Thank you every one who showed your support by either attending or participating in the conversations surrounding the event.

As for the next meeting, I’m going to start a discussion about that in a new thread. Hope to see you there!
