Courts and Legal Staff Writer

The Position

The Courts and Legal Staff Writer is a full-­time salaried position on the State Desk. This is a remote position. It is the job of the Courts and Legal Staff Writer to develop and improve courts and legal information on the State Desk.

This Staff Writer will be maintaining a large number of court and legal pages, and routine updates to these pages will be required. While this position will involve in-­depth writing, it will also consist of repetitive updates to pre­-existing pages.

Skills

You will be a self-­motivated, organized, computer-­savvy individual with a fact­-based, yet engaging writing style and impeccable attention to detail. You will be able to communicate clearly, be open to critique and collaboration, and be able to complete both repetitive tasks and more complex research assignments in a timely manner.

You will have the experience that enables you to report complicated information in a neutral, clear and concise manner and have a propensity for innovation and flexibility. To succeed in this position, you will demonstrate organizational skills including the ability to effectively prioritize competing demands, proofreading ability and familiarity with the AP Style Guide.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include a background in legal work and professional writing. This includes an education in law, previous experience as a paralegal, court reporter or another related position.

Environment

The Staff Writer will work remotely from their home location. All Ballotpedia staff work remotely. To join Ballotpedia, you must have a computer with Internet access. Ballotpedia uses Google Applications (Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive and more) to accomplish our goals. Some familiarity with Google Applications is helpful.

Ballotpedia is currently transitioning to a results­-only work environment (ROWE); we are on track to receive certification by mid-­February. A ROWE is a workplace in which every employee is 100% accountable to the results and 100% autonomous over their time. ROWE workplaces have been shown to provide better service to the ultimate customer of the business while also improving employee engagement and work satisfaction. Each employee will be oriented to the principles of a ROWE during new employee training.

Compensation

Ballotpedia’s editorial compensation is based on a scale, which can be viewed here. New employees are typically hired into Level 1 or Level 2 salaries with opportunities for raises coming every six months­­--December and June­­--after the completion of the initial review period. In addition to salary, Ballotpedia offers bonuses based on performance and a $6,000 annual benefits stipend, which may be used to pay for a full benefits package, including health, vision and dental insurance; life insurance; and more. If benefits are not elected, the $6,000 stipend is taxed as regular income and added to the employee’s salary.

Verbatim Staff Writer

The Position

The Staff Writer is a full-­time salaried position on the Verbatim Desk. This is a remote position. It is the job of the staff writer to research and write fact checked articles for Ballotpedia’s Verbatim Desk.

The Staff Writer will develop assignments and complete work assigned by management. The Staff Writer will closely interact with the Verbatim Desk team to launch and expand the Verbatim content area at Ballotpedia. As a Staff Writer, you will:

  • assist in the creation and completion of complex research and writing assignments
  • communicate with team members on a regular basis, receiving and offering constructive criticism on pages on which you and others are working
  • adhere to deadlines, including those set internally and by external partners, such as donors or granting institutions
  • perform minor, repetitive edits necessary for keeping pages in your project area current and up to standards

Skills

You must be a self­-motivated, organized, computer-­savvy individual with a fact-­based, yet engaging writing style and impeccable attention to detail. Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in journalism, English or political science.

State Desk Project Manager

The Position

The State Desk Project Manager will oversee editorial staff members and direct content production and is not involved in writing on a day­-to­-day basis. The Project Manager will use excellent project management skills and solid personnel management skills in order to produce high quality content in the State Desk project areas. The Project Manager will hire, coach, supervise and terminate staff; compile reports; conceptualize and write special reports and make constant improvements to all articles in the project. The Project Manager will revel in a good report and enjoy working with spreadsheets to track progress and demonstrate progress to stakeholders, both internally and externally.

The State Desk Project Manager will have an interest in some of the areas of state politics covered by the desk; the Project Manager is tasked with overseeing content production for Ballotpedia’s coverage of state ballot measures and state courts. The Project Manager will have excellent judgement relative to determining priorities with content coverage.

Skills

You will be self-­motivated and computer-­savvy with a knack for managing remote teams. You must be able to elicit the best work from staff members with a wide variety of strengths and coach team members to new levels of proficiency at existing and new tasks. You will possess the ability to delegate and have excellent project management skills, including the ability to effectively prioritize competing demands all while adhering to deadlines. You will have exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail which will enable you to execute repetitive tasks while adhering to efficiency and error reduction standards. You will excel at communicating across a variety of platforms, allowing you to report complicated information in a neutral, clear and concise manner. You will be innovative with the ability to collaborate with coworkers on content production.

Qualifications 

Project and personnel management skills and an interest in state-­level politics are required. An education in English, Journalism or a related field is appreciated, but it is not required. Experience in technical writing and copy editing will serve you well in this position.
