Spread the word! Ballotpedia is a great resource--similar to LocalWiki, except it's dedicated to providing nonpartisan information about politicians, elections, etc.

Ballotpedia is currently seeking staff writers for two different Desks within the editorial Department, the State Desk and the Verbatim Desk, Ballotpedia's new fact checking project.

Environment

The Staff Writer will work remotely from their home location. Over 90 percent of Ballotpedia staff work from a remote location. To join Ballotpedia, you must have a computer with Internet access. Ballotpedia uses Google Applications (Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive and more) to accomplish our goals. Some familiarity with Google Applications is helpful.

Compensation

Ballotpedia’s editorial compensation is based on a scale, which can be viewed here. New employees are typically hired into Level 1 or Level 2 salaries with opportunities for raises coming every six months--December and January--after the completion of the initial review period. In addition to salary, Ballotpedia offers bonuses based on performance and a $6,000 annual benefits stipend, which may be used to pay for a full benefits package, including health, vision and dental insurance; life insurance; and more. If benefits are not elected, the $6,000 stipend is taxed as regular income and added to the employee’s salary.

State Desk Project Director

Status: Full-time salaried; exempt

The Position

The Project Director is a remote, full-time salaried position on the State Desk. You will help cover all aspects of politics at the state level, including state executives (Governors, Attorneys General, etc), legislatures, courts and ballot measures. Experience in these areas isn’t required; passion is.

Our ideal candidate is a good writer, sharp thinker and excellent planner. Your home should be full of smart books neatly arranged. You will be holding yourself and your staff to the highest possible standards of prose and professionalism.

All full-time staff members work a regular schedule and travel at least twice per year for meetings. It is the job of the Project Director to hire, coach, supervise and terminate staff; compile reports; conceptualize and write special reports and make constant improvements to all articles in the project.

Assignments

As a Project Director, you will:

  • supervise, hire and terminate staff

  • work with your Desk Editor to develop content areas and collaborate with peers

  • create time estimates and goals within content areas

Content

The successful Project Director will organize current content while searching for and proposing new areas of content. They will also engage in:

  • regularly auditing content

  • evaluating procedures and ensuring the project components are up-to-date

  • balancing quality and quantity

  • writing new content in the areas they cover

Supervising employees

Project Directors are responsible for:

  • clearly outlining and explaining team and project priorities

  • recruiting and interviewing successful staff members

  • coaching staff members to higher levels of proficiency

  • recognizing and encouraging staff talents

  • training new members of a team in the project area and on BP standards

  • identifying needs for sustained training within content areas

  • ensuring that staff members meet expectations

  • overseeing temporary employees, hourly staffers and salaried employees

  • performing informative and data-based staff evaluations

  • making and implementing decisions about compensation, terminations and hour increases and decreases

In addition to being responsible for an area of expertise, Project Directors also contribute to and engage with staff members on organization-wide content. Some examples of this are error prevention and clean-up and committee work. Past committees have included the hiring committee, evaluation committee and compensation committee.

Tracking goals

A major component of working as a Project Director at Ballotpedia is working on and improving our project features apparatus. This is the ability within a project to set goals and easily identify progress. Each project should have tracking spreadsheets, a quality calendar and a complex procedure checklist.

Project Directors must be able to quickly identify specific pieces of information about their content areas in order to provide information to our donors, board of directors and administrators. These areas include:

  • the number of errors within a project

  • quality level of articles

  • traffic statistics

  • progress toward and deadlines for specific projects

  • efficiency of team members

  • timeline and calendar for updates needed to articles within the project area

  • number of pages within a project

Skills

You will be self-motivated and computer-savvy with a knack for managing remote teams. You must be able to elicit the best work from staff members with a wide variety of strengths and coach team members to new levels of proficiency at existing and new tasks. You will possess the ability to delegate and have excellent project management skills, including the ability to effectively prioritize competing demands all while adhering to deadlines. You will have exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail which will enable you to execute repetitive tasks while adhering to efficiency and error reduction standards. You will excel at communicating across a variety of platforms, allowing you to report complicated information in a neutral, clear and concise manner. You will be innovative with the ability to collaborate with coworkers on content production.
