The intersection of Black History & Woman's History Months is the
perfect occasion for an evening of lyrical fire from one of Oakland's
premier poets and original Slam champ - Roxanne Hanna-Ware. Way back
in '99 Roxanne helped The Bay storm The National Poetry Slam taking
Oakland's first team ever to 3rd place (of 64) in the nation, behind
only SF & San Jose who tied for the win. Since then she's been a
bedrock of the local scene, these days seen wrecking mics and winning
competitions at some of The Town's hottest spots. All this while
working tirelessly to educate and empower young women to make safer
decisions. Roxanne will have you howling with laughter and fury
alternatively, keeping you on your your toes intellectually the whole
time. This is a don't miss feature!
And speaking of Roxanne, she's is also featuring at The Town's newest
poetry series "A Taste of Poetry" at Taste of Joy Restaurant & Lounge.
This show is a little different from the other poetic happenings you
generally come across - there's no open-mic or slam; just tried and
true performers in an intimate setting given the time to share the
full gamut of their work. This is the perfect opportunity to catch the
best of the best sharing work you may not see anywhere else. And the
food! The food is off the hook!!
