Wow,
This is the week for YOU to come see some poetry!
I'm sure you already know that The 11th Annual Oakland Poetry Slam
FINALS featuring HBO Def Poet Sonya Renee is this Thursday, April
29th. But but did you know that this years finals are at the town's
freshest and phreshest live performance spot The New Parish, in the
bustling Uptown Arts District? This is the same spot that Dave
Chappelle recently sold out 10 shows in a row. What, you didn't know
that Dave was in town for a whole week last month? Guess you're not
"friends" with folks on FaceBook huh, well you should be! We'll put
links at the end so you don't miss out next time one of these
unadvertised shows comes around.
This Thursday everyone's favorite hostess, that dynamic diva Nazelah
Jeffries will keep the crowd clapping, the show moving and everyone
laughing. Her partner in crime, Slam Selecta DJ MR. G will bee there
too, scouring the crates for the perfect aural accent to drop in your
ear-hole. We also have an extra special treat for you - HBO Def Poet,
'04 Individual Slam Champion and all around dope individual Sonya
Renee will bring her awesomeness to the O. That's on top of the actual
FINALS! Where YOU pick the team to represent Oakland at The National
Poetry Slam this August in St. Paul MN. This year's finalists are a
cross section of wily vets and fresh faced rookies, winners of big
money slams and even our first ever tandem!
This year's Finalists are: Aaron Gardner (Oakland '07, San Jose '01),
Stephen Meads (Oakland '09, SF '08), Joyce Lee (Oakland '09), Jason
Bayani (Berkeley '07 - '08, SF '03, San Jose '02), Dre & Patrick aka

We also thought that you might wanna know about Best of the Bay Poetry
on Tuesday at Sweets Ballroom. Here's a little more about that:
For the last 10 years the Bay Area scene has been a Heavy weight in
the world of Poetry Slam. The Bay area teams consistently see Finals
stages at National's and make Semi's EVERY year!! The Bay Area's rich
perfomance poetry community deserves a stage and venue big enough to
hold all the talent we have. That venue is Historic Sweets Ballroom!
The poets performing are not only top performance poets in the Bay
they are also top performance poets in the nation! Kim Johnson placed
in the top 10 in the Individual World Poetry competition in October
and was one of the coaches for team San Francisco that placed #3 in 09
National Poetry slam, Joyce Lee is a powerhouse of a woman the grand-
slam champ and anchor on team Oakland in 09. Laura Yes-Yes tours
religeously and placed #3 this year at the Woman of The World Poetry
Slam. Proletariat Bronze; comprised of Jaylee Alde, Jason Bayani, and
Mesej1, all of whom were members of multiple teams and all having
appeared on National's finals stage. The icing on the performance art
cake is the Hip-Hop funk Band Dynamic's sounds of soul, funk, hip-hop
and R&B will blow you away with their energy. Your host for the event
will be Dre Host of The Berkeley Poetry slam, member of the 08 San
Francisco team, 09 Life Sentence Team (Fairfield), Frontman for the
