The Women of the World Poetry Slam is a tournament created for women,
facilitated by women, honoring women. In March 72 Poets head to Denver
and face off with 1, 2, 3 & 4 minute poems to see who's the fiercest.
From these talented depths 12 poets ascend to the finals stage where a
champion is made.

This year marks the fifth year for this competition and for the first
time it will been held in Denver CO. Previous winners include Andrea
Gibson, who won the 2008 competition, Rachel McKibbens, who won in
2009, and Eboni Hogan, who won the 2010 competition.

On February 9th Oakland will honor our 2012 Women of the World Poetry
Slam representative! We'll have our patented WIDE-Open-mic and Slam as
always and our feature for the evening will be Danee "Queen-D" Black.
Registration is already taken care of, but travel and lodging still
need to be covered. Be sure to bring a couple extra bucks to buy a
chapbook or CD to help get Danee to Denver!

About our feature - Queen D burst onto the poetry scene in 2006 and
immediately won the hearts of audiences across the Bay Area with her
raw, heart wrenching, in-your-face poetry. She got a taste of the
national Slam scene as a member of the 2007 Oakland Slam Team. After a
two year hiatus, she returned for more, this time even hungrier and
more detrmined than ever. She was a member of the 2010 San Francisco
Slam Team ranked 10th in the nation, the 2011 Oakland Slam Team,
represented Oakland at WoWPS 2011 in Columbus was an ILL List Finalist
in 2010 and is the reigning Golden State Grand Slam and Berkeley Indie
Slam champ.

We'll also have a spotlight set from the winningest comic from our
soon to return Comedy Slam - Sammy Obeid. Sammy graduated from Cal
with a 3.9 GPA and a double major in applied mathematics and
business ... to become a comedian! He now uses his educational
accomplishments as credits in his bio. He is the first comedian to
ever appear on the Food Network telling jokes (Throwdown with Bobby
Flay, "Burritos" Episode). Sammy was also the first-place winner of
the Bay Area Comedy Competition in 2008 and the first-place winner of
San Francisco's Killer Laughs Competition in 2009 and can found making
rooms roar with laughter up and down the west coast and across the
country.
