Coming up on Thursday Sept 13th We have a TREAT for you - 2 time Grand Slam Champion JOYCE LEE is back in town for a bit and we're featuring her! Man, we've missed Joyce's fire on the mic and in the scene and we're thrilled to see a full set from her while she's here. If you didn't know she's been off in Turkey for the last bunch of months working with youth and exploring the world. The show's next Thurs at the regular time (8pm) but stay tuned for details on the where since our normal venue is still reeling from a recent death in the family. 

Sam Sax is the 2012 Oakland Grand Slam Champion!

Sam is an orator and a scoundrel. He is a paisley tornado born into an ink storm. His poems are a speakeasy accordion dueling with an audience of amphetamized wind chimes. Sam spits hot fireand, as a matter of fact, his lips have been cauterized to his teeth; that's why he has the beard, to try to maintain some semblance of normalcy. 

SF Weekly's Evan Karp said of Sam's work "His use of metaphor is so masterful and his commitment to emotional candor so zealous that you identify with his words regardless of gender, sexual preference, or penchant for danger. More of this, please!" Sam runs New Mission Poetry into the basement (2nd & 4th Thursdays at Viracocha in SF) and Slams microphones into the pavement.

Sam is Oakland's first queer champ. This is the 2nd year in a row he's won the title, which carries with it a spot in iWPS - the individual World Poetry Slam. This years tourney will be in Fayetville AR from October 4th - 6th. Please, Poetry and Poetry Slam fans - be a true patron of the arts by opening not only your hearts but also your wallets! Help us get Sam to Arkansas - they need to hear what he has to say.

We Need Your Help Getting Sam to Fayetville!

There are various expenses involved in getting a poet to and through iWPS. There's airfare and lodging of course, but there's also stuff like event registration and getting to and from the airport, printing CDs/DVDs/Collections to sell and exchange not to mention food and smokes while there.
