Family Festival Fun

Our Pandemonium! kids festival for 0-10-year-olds is all set for a Wonderful Woodland programme this year, brought to you by the team from Lovelyland.

Get creative with nature-art workshops, den building, costume making, and painting sessions or learn how to embroider beautiful leaves for our storytelling tree sculpture.

There will be family song writing workshops and Junkyard Jukebox drop-in sessionsmelodeon music taster sessions or the chance to be part of The Big Band.

Get moving every morning with Believe-in family fun yoga, try some body percussion and animal boogie in our dance workshops, or sign up for the woodland walkabout party with Sal Tonge’s silent discos.

Musician David Gibb will take families on a musical journey through his hilarious and often surreal imagination and there'll be the chance to take part in crafts and games in our outdoor family village including Sergeant Major Funn with his family games, interactive treasure hunt, storytelling sessions and circus skills.

And we’re introducing a brand new under 5’s programme full of sensory activities, story times and Makaton music sessions for the Wee Folkies in their very own woodland wonderland tent.

Refolkus, our programme for 11-20-year-olds, will be unveiling its 2022 line-up very soon!

Last call for the Launchpad

The chance to be part of our festival on the 2022 Launchpad is coming to a close. We’re looking for folk influenced bands, duos or singer songwriters aged 16 to 26 to apply for one of the three places available. The Launchpad is very kindly sponsored by What’s On, the region’s essential entertainment guide.

Performers must be available to attend the festival between Friday August 26th to 29th. They will receive a free artist and guest ticket, on-site camping and backstage hospitality. For more information, click here.

To apply, send a short biography including your location and ages, some links to performances on Soundcloud or YouTube for example and your contact details to j...@shrewsburyfolkfestival.co.uk before May 27. Only the selected performers will be contacted.

We are honoured to have John Jones (Oysterband) and Steve Knightley (Show of Hands) as our festival patrons, both of whom will be performing this year - JJ with his exclusive Rising Road show and Steve in a rare festival Show of Hands performance as a duo with Steve Beer.

JJ looks ahead to 2022

Another great SFF is on the horizon. After last year’s understandable all British line-up it is great to have an international dimension back.

I saw Judy Collins deliver a consummately professional and riveting performance at Wickham Festival a few years back. Timeless. Carlos Núñez is just a master musician and great performer and has brought the wild sound of the Galician pipes and whistles into the mainstream of Celtic music.

Add to that the infectious rhythms of John Peel favourite Kanda Bongo Man and the energy of Black Umfolosi and you have dance heaven out there under Shropshire skies.

All that and the best beers around.  Meet you there.

JJ.

A word from Steve

One of the highlights of last summer’s festival season was to play on Shrewsbury’s new open air stage. To look out and see a host of lights moving like ships at sea during ‘Cousin Jack’ will be a memory that will stay with me for a long time.

Indeed the whole event seemed to go up another gear and the new site layout was a real hit with both newcomers and regulars alike. And what better way to relax between the incredible music could there be than to sample the delights of the cocktail bus or the singing and real ales of the mighty Berwick Bar!

As ever Sandra and the team have assembled the season’s best festival line-up in what now must be Britain’s premiere folk and roots event.

Steve.
