Organic field days
OAK members and others interested in organic practices are welcome to join Organic Valley’s
Jake Schmitz and veterinarian Dr Paul Dettloff on two field days on organic dairy farms. The
topics won’t be limited to dairy cows, however. On June 18 from 10 am to 3 pm, participants
will explore Dudley Tapp’s Washington County, Ky dairy farm. Dudley is switching his enterprise
over to organic. His cows are fed 100% forages. He also produces veal, eggs and meat chickens,
which he sells at farmers markets. The address is 228 Goatley Ln, Springfield, 40069.
On June 19, the tour moves to Trenton, Ky in Todd County. John Beiler milks for Organic Valley.
He also raises row crops organically to feed the cows, and Jake has done research on row crop
production yields which he will also share. The address is 1221 Mimms Rd, Trenton, 42286.
Dr Dettloff, who has his own practice in Wisconsin, is internationally known as a herd-health
specialist, and can answer all your questions about raising healthy calves and heifers with
organic practices, parasite controls, and so on. He has also studied dairy sheep and goats.
There is no fee and you don’t need to RSVP. For more information, call Lynn Greene at
