So recently our chapter of OA has been focusing on promotions...you
may notice that a lot of local veggie freindly establishments have
been sporting Organic Athlete fliers.

While promotions is a never ending process, it is also important to
inject some content into our actions. Hence I want to open up this
forum to suggetions for possible community service events our chapter
can organize and attend. If there is an idea that could have a 3-fold
effect of simultaneously:

A) aiding the local community of Columbus
B) promoting environmentalism
C) be geared towards sport/athleticism

That would be ideal....for instance cleaning up a section of a local
bike/trail that we all enjoy using.

Any suggestions?

I believe downtown Columbus recently started a "borrow a bike" thing for
people to get around the office buildings instead of using their cars;
can't remember which female official started it with about 10 bikes and
said would increase if it took hold. Could connect with that in some way.
Still don't see like-minded organizations networking with each other in a
public way like Clintonville Community Market, RadDog hot dog stand, Mercy
for Animals, etc. I know we all know each other but I don't see promotion
being linked among the groups. I was a little more active when I worked in
Columbus yet lived in Thornville. I no longer work in C-bus so am now very
frugal on gas trips there...maybe twice a month. Forgot to mention the
restaurants too...Dragonfly, Benevolence, Pattycake, etc. as well as the
running clubs, bike clubs, etc. Just some ideas....It would be great to
start planning now for a spring run/bike that was totally vegan and
sponsored by...advertised for these folks as well. There's probably a race
director seeing this that might help get it started. Just some thoughts...

Rebecca,

I couldn't agree with you more. The veggie community in Columbus is
impressive, yet makes up just a fraction of the whole population.
There is a definite need to open communication amongst all the veggie
restraunts, whole food co-ops, animal rights groups, grass roots
community groups, etc. that have share our common lifestyle.

I love the idea of a ride/race organized for the spring (maybe
summer) that could bring all these peices of the puzzle together and
help inform those out of the loop (meat-eaters) as well as boost
awareness of the presence of our favorite companies/organizations.
The California OA chapter has something similar to this called the
"Tour d'Organics" ride that they hold annually. But like you said we
would certainly need an experienced race director to help pull this
all together.

Anyone have any (or know anyone with) experience in organizing
charity races?

Yes, I'm well aware of the goings on in CA...I was supposed to go there as
an intern during the "tour" and before but the plans didn't come together
solidly...in the meantime, I took an opportunity to do service work in NY
at Omega Institute after my running camp week there for ChiRunning. I'll
help how I can on these endeavors but I think you'll have better luck
hooking up with the running clubs as far as race directors go. I've done
just about every kind of race around so I can probably help steer you away
from the ones that are "commercial" and just into it for the money. Just
google away and maybe you could get some tips from Bradley in CA. Use my
name however you like. Another person that maybe will have connections is
Jay Smithberger, remember him? He just broke his own record at the
StoneSteps 50k Sunday! Maybe he'd even be willing to be the race director!
Keep me in the loop. I have the time to be the ring leader but,
unfortunately, no means. No source of income at all right now so I watch
gas for trips to Columbus, all expenses, etc. Hope others will respond but
I think oacolumbus is too small and too new to rely on for this undertaking.

There's a few options biking related.
If you're hoping to start a USA Cycling team for the local OA chapter. Then each team is supposed to organize at least 1 race per year.

easiest to hardest
1. a bike tour ala 'tour d' organics'
get a route. mark the route with arrows. get a public school to let you park for free and setup a few pop-up tents. thats it.
if you'd like to charge money and have a rest stop or two, get some sponsors and volunteers to donate food/time. even better. Cost for this is very minimal.

better plan the date now so you can get it in the 2009 Ohio Cycling Calendar. the calendar is pretty full.

2. help organize a cross race
Kyle (the other half of Cap City Cross) and I have the process pretty streamlined. If you find a park/venue, which is the hardest part of the planning, we can help you design the course, get the race permit and organize registration. We just need someone to find the venue and 4-8 volunteers on race day and the day before to set the course up. It's pretty easy, just takes time. Cost is minimal.

3. Organize a Crit or Road Race.
I would avoid this until your members get a few years of racing and organizing in. It involves working with local townships, closing streets (rolling or complete), hiring police, tons of extra work. But you might be able to do something unique and cool that no one else does like a hill climb road time trial. The only hard part about that is the timing coordination. Scioto Trail State Park has a few great climbs that would be cool to race up. State parks are the easiest to work with, btw.

Just depends how far you'd like to take OA and in what direction.

hope that helped.

Tremendous amount of help and advice all in one e-mail!  Thanks.  I see this is only cycling, no running, but still keep me on the volunteer list.  I can't afford a "real" bike but do ride for fun on my old one quite a bit.  But I am an ultratrail runner (vegan) so I think it all overlaps...at least I'd like to see it do that and will help where I can down the road.  Pun intended.
