Pelenise
Alofa Pilitati lives in Kiribati on the frontline of a changing
climate. The islands are facing a crisis right now. Salt water collects
in Pelenise’s front yard every high tide and her coconut palms
have died. Access to clean drinking water is getting worse as wells are
polluted by salt. People are struggling to grow enough food. Yet,
migrating is absolutely the last thing they want to consider. Pacific
communities have strong connections to the land – their culture, their history and their
livelihoods are all intimately tied to their islands. As Pelenise says,"You
have no identity if you have no land."
Sign the petition
There are only 100 days left until the crucial UN climate change
conference in Copenhagen.
Please sign Oxfam’s Feel the Heat petition. Urge the New Zealand government to
do what is necessary to keep the Pacific islands inhabitable and help
Pelenise’s people cope with the climate changes that are already
happening.
