I'm looking for recommendations for budget hosting for smaller websites
using CMS Made Simple.
In the past I've used a reseller's package through hostme.co.nz but I'm
looking to move my resold sites to their own packages, and have a couple
of new sites coming up that I'd like to start off on their own hosting
plans.
Cpanel would be nice, but is not essential

SiteHost is usually the recommendation around here. I've recommended lots of people since I was recommended to them and I've never heard a single complaint. They're good dudes.

Kind regards,

From what I can see sitehost is overkill for this.  Two very small sites, different purpose but same customer.
CMS Made simple is really overkill here too, but will give the customer control.

I do not want recommendations for reseller's packages.  I suck at managing them

SiteHost do really good shared hosting too, it's just not their core product.
http://www.sitehost.co.nz/hosting/shared-hosting (Control panel image is not accurate anymore & ignore reseller info).

We have a small client using it and it's been perfect.

1 vote for MeshNet - good for small businesses, Jo is good to deal with and very affordable. Has been willing to adjust services to fit client needs for me, so...

How about GoDaddy.com? I'm using it :) Good enough for me and comes with several packages that you can choose.

I was on Godaddy briefly in late 2006 to early 2007, so this may all
be ancient and out of date. Their PHP was old, their site addition
function was unreliable (As in you always had to check that the site
had added & try again if it didn't) and they only provided DNS if they
were also the registrar of the domain name. Add to that the big one:
hosting wasn't core business for them.

Personally I use an FDC Servers virtual server, all they do is hosting
and (within the limits of what they do) their help desk is highly
efficient. Unfortunately I can't recommend them for the OP as I have
no idea what their end user shared hosting is like (I don't even know
if they sell it).

Over the years I've found that my satisfaction with hosting providers
is a direct function of how many servers they have and how much
hosting is their core business.

Why go offshore - openhost in Albany can offer you everything you need
and their service is great. Apart from that their power comes from
windfarms and hydro generation.

I'd recommend a small VPS - its real easy to manage using Plesk and
the techs at openhost will help where needed.

cheers

I couldn't agree more. When it's their core business they know that
stuff like mod_rewrite and automated backups aren't just 'nice to have'
extras. When they have lots of servers you are more likely to get round
the clock service.

Harvey.
