Hi all,

Just been flicking through some older posts on the Group re: VPS in NZ. Many of the same names popping up, but many of them appear to be early stages of adoption for most authors.

Does anyone have any positive reccommendations on this after a decent length of service?

If you're referring to virtual servers, I've got 4 at swizzle.co.nz,
been very good.

Hi,

I've been using Webdrive's VMWare ESX for a major client for a year
now and its been very good. I've had good experiences in terms of
support though with them for years anyway and price is rarely the
decision factor with the work that we do.

When we compared the packages though, it was also the cheapest.

I've also referred several people to them and never heard anything but great feedback.

I used a Linux VPS at Net24 from October 2007 to February 2009 and it
was a good system, although they tended to reboot them too often for
my liking to perform scheduled weekly maintenance. I still manage
another one for a customer at Net24 and the main reason we chose it
was because the international bandwidth included was really good
value.

In February I moved a dedicated server at Sitehost because I needed a
lot more disk space and disk is so expensive on VPS servers in NZ.

I moved my blog to a US based VPS (at vps.net) in August because I was
chewing through so much international bandwidth so it saved me money
to offshore it. If you don't specifically need to host within NZ I
highly recommend vps.net. They're good value and you can add extra
nodes as you need them (each node is a block of 0.4GHZ of dedicated
CPU, 256MB of RAM, 10GB storage and 250GB bandwidth.

When you start looking at the cost of VPS servers in the USA you
realise how expensive they are here...

+1

Have no servers with them, but have commissioned servers and worked on
VPS servers for clients. They have been around for a very long time.

Thanks guys. (but anyone feel free to add)

I actually had net24 open in front of me when you reply came in Chris. Very
reasonable pricing.

SiteHost are very reasonable too Keri.

And yes, Webdrive are always on my list after working with them for 4 years.
For this one, cost is an issue unfortunately. $180 p/m is a pretty big
difference from $60 p/m for similar specs. Although Webdrive have always
been solid both in service and support.

The only other ones I'm currently looking at on Google are OpenHost and
Maxnet.

Hi Aaron

Have you looked at LunarPages or GoDaddy? Not sure about the service,
but the prices seem pretty reasonable.

Hi Todd,

No I haven't looked at those, as I am looking for NZ VPS providers.

Thanks

I've never considered Webdrive to be cheap, although we recently provided Webdrive with a quote we got from SiteHost and they dropped their price massively to just above SiteHost's quote.

RimuHosting have just released VPS plans based in Auckland. I've only been with them for about a week, so can't comment on much, but it's a heck of a lot faster than the shared host I used to be on :)

Very interesting. I've only ever heard good things about Rimu Hosting
and have looked at them in the past when looking at international
hosting options. It's good to know they are now hosting here as well.
One thing to watch out for is those prices are in USD:

Yeah I noticed that too.

Still, their traffic offering is well up there even when paying USD.

+1 Sitehost.

Was it a big weekend for SH customers? Usually these threads are a landslide in their favour :)

Thanks Chris.

Found a thread over on Geekzone with pretty much the same feedback on SiteHost.

Been talking with Quintin yesterday arvo and he set me up a demo of their new custom control panel.

Are any of you guys using "Container"? Or have you just installed your own system. Or of course are you managing virtual hosts, email etc from the CLI?

Hey Aaron,

Quintin's a good dude, knows his shit and gets everything sorted.

Currently we've just got standard VPSes, ranging from Xen Pro to customised Xen Ultimates with a redundancy setup. We are however currently looking at a container for our next VPS as it suits specific requirements. So I guess the question is what you want to use the VPS for.

Kind regards,

Cheers mate,

I am looking at Xen Pro for the general hosting of a few clients, but mainly
to give me space and the means to add subdomain accounts to both my own
domain and my clients, without having to pay for a whole new virtual host
(as I currently need to do with Webdrive) as I wish to offer clients
auxillary services.

I'm fairly comfortable with CLI, but for me, any control panel will be to
facilitate an easy way to setup, monitor and change virtualhost and DNS
settings. The fact that container also seems to handle domain management,
DNS and renewals is a big bonus.

In a nutshell, the VPS is for hosting reselling to development clients only.

Reselling is a perfect match for the Container.

Hi Aaron,

RimuHosting are the best that I have experienced by far. They are a NZ
company that usually does US or AU based VPS but they have just
introduced NZ-based VPS plans too. Awesome support and knowledge. Good
speeds. Heaps of flexibility. Decent pricing.

Over the past couple of years we have moved all our clients from our
US provider to our VPS at Openhost (Webdrive) in Albany. Pretty
painless operation and all clients very happy with increase in speed -
and we are very happy with the support. Check out www.netpages.co.nz
for an example of the speed ;)

The decision to remain with openhost was based on their support, speed
and uptime, I don't even know how there prices compare.

It is highly unlikely we would ever use an offshore provider again.

Used openhost.co.nz (webdrive) for VPS and wedrive.co.nz for ESX VS (note: not VS not VPS) - both excellent service and support, although a little costly.

Used Rimuhosting to run dedicated in the UK - sales support in NZ was great, but their customer support (which is online) - was incredibly frustrating - great to have a 45mins turnaround, and can view an online wait queue - but every question or response/clarification to an earlier support issue goes back into the 45min wait queue and they're not really happy to talk to you by phone.  This makes trying to track down or resolve a relatively simple issue where there's a little more information to provide, massively frustrating - for this I wouldn't use Rimuhosting again.

Cheers,
-Dan

Has anyone had success integrating an open source forum into Symfony, so
that when a user is logged in to the website, they are also logged into
the forum?
Also so that links in the forum go through Symfony's routing system?

Had the same pb - sfSimpleForumPlugin is symfony 1.0, and propel only (not doctrine).
The author of the plugin left the symfony project so no much hope for an upgrade soon ...

Hi Sid

Nothing except it's a bit too simple.
There are a few nice open source forum solutions for PHP, so I would
like to be able to integrate one, rather than reinvent the wheel.

Todd.
