Hi

Can anyone recommend an SMS gateway? It appears that telecom is not
as "connected" as vodafone. If I send a text message from skype to
telecom then it never gets there.

One of the things I am thinking about is a script that checks my sites
and sends me a txt-message if any of them do not return 200 OK.

Any thoughts?

Search this mailing list - this is a common question. Someone [who is
less lazy than I] want to add a page to the wiki?

In my experience short of paying a *local* gateway, this is the fare. It's
gets worse as the per message price goes down.

The solution I use here is a GSM cellular modem (though CDMA versions are also
available I recommend GSM for obvious reasons) with a Vodafone SIM card in
it. Message delivery is as good as what you get from a handheld phone.

I have one laying around here I might be willing to sell.

If you do go down this route - get a Wavecom as they are the most respected
brand. (Multitech should also be good though I haven't tried their GSM
gateway I am very happy with their fax modems)

Clickatell - Been there and I would never use this company again.

Michael,

Can I ask why? I am using them at the moment and I have found them to be
really good.

Thanks,
Nathan.

I'm with Michael on this - I stopped using Clickatell for commercial
projects because clients were whinging non-stop about messages not being
delivered to the Telecom network. I switched clients to TNZ and haven't
had a problem with delivery in over a year. Way more expensive than
Clickatell, but not when you include your time dealing with lost messages.

I still use Clickatell for my own purposes - server monitoring and event
notifications etc where the recipient is always me (Vodafone). They work
great for that, and they're cheap.

Harvey.

Harvey sums up my position well.

I will add that I contacted them several times (at the time) and they kept
promising to fix it - which didn't happen - and well it's no surprise to me
to hear that nothing has changed.

I stand by my SMS modem recommendation especially as NZ is a very easy country
routing wise, with only 2 providers you could get on a texting plan with
both, or if the volumes are smallish, a texting plan with Vodafone.

Thanks everybody for their input to this

I've added a wiki page which hopefully has collated a lot of our
experiences from previous list posts. I tried to avoid paraphrasing
people too much, and just linked back to the Google Groups archive
where required.

http://www.phpug.org.nz/index.php/SMS_Providers

Please add your experiences / thoughts / gripes so this resource can
grow ... if you're offering this service (folks from Catalyst and
Vodafone I know are on this list) then please feel free to add more
details - I was only able to write up the services I'd used myself.

Have a fun xmas all!

Awesome job Chris, thanks for collating this.

I've added a link from the wiki homepage so it's easier to find.

Kind regards,
James McGlinn

Thanks for doing that James

Brendan Brink, please feel free to add your own rates / details to the
link above.

Likewise any other SMS providers on list (Paul Brislen, if you're
still here, and Jasper if you're still doing SMS?), please give it a
once-over and correct any errors or omissions.
