Hi all,

I don't know if this group is still active and if not can someone please refer me to the new one.
Nevertheless, I am interested in adding/updating a bunch of waterways in Canterbury from the new LINZ river names pilot https://data.linz.govt.nz/layer/103632-nz-river-name-lines-pilot/.
Not all of them. Mostly just the named rivers that can be clearly verified by aerial photos that do not already exist in OSM. Could anyone give me some advice on the proper way I should go abut doing this please?
By the way, I work for Environment Canterbury (Canterbury Regional Council) and I'm trying to see if utilising the OSM waterways is a viable option for us (which I hope it will be).

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I have CCed this to talk-nz
https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-nz (OSM hosted email list
that might be considered more 'official', though neither it nor
nzopengis have had much activity lately!)

Depending on how you plan to go about adding the data, and how much data
there is, it may be considered an import (as opposed to ordinary
editing). Please read
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Import/Guidelines

Imports need to be discussed on the imports mailing list.

In any case your changesets will need the correct tags identifying where
the data came from e.g.

attribution= https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Contributors#LINZ
source_ref=https://data.linz.govt.nz/layer/103632-nz-river-name-lines-pilot/

LINZ has already provided appropriate permission for data use by OSM
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:LINZ_OSM-CC-4.0_waiver.pdf

It is hard to tell how much detail you need, perhaps a Q&A in real time
would be useful. At https://chat.nzoss.nz/channel/opengis (sign up
required). I encourage anyone else reading to use this channel too...
(I'm eliot.b on that site)

Thank you very much Elliot. I really appreciate the info.

I've seen the agreements with LINZ, which makes these imports possible fortunately.
And I'm definitely keen to discuss and collaborate with the OSM NZ community to ensure that utilising and updating OSM is done in a proper way.
ECan does want to trial using the OSM waterways for some of our purposes and being able to feed improvements back to OSM.

I did try https://chat.nzoss.nz/channel/opengis , but I seem to just get a loading screen unfortunately (on Chrome). But I would definitely love to talk with some knowledgeable OSM people about this.

Thanks again,
Mike

Hi all,

So I've been doing some thinking and testing.
I don't think it would be wise to simply to a bulk import of the LINZ waterways. The LINZ dataset only has geospatial lines and some names, and if we want to have a proper waterways network with all the proper network integrity then a bulk import would simply create a useless mess that would need to be cleaned up.
Instead, I would prefer more of an iterative approach (which seems more OSM-like anyway).

It would use QGIS in conjunction with JOSM. QGIS to select several waterways to be processed, dissolve them on the river name, then export as geojson. Import the geojson into JOSM, merge them with the OSM data, process the imported data, then upload the results to OSM. I've already made a couple example imports: https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/78990517#map=14/-41.9538/173.9114

Please let me know what people think about this procedure.

I've written out a more detailed procedure that I would like to add to a new page under https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Import/Catalogue , but I haven't figured out how to create a new page...only edit an existing one.

Thanks,
Mike

Create the link as if the page exists: [[LINZ waterways import]] Then
IIRC if you click the link you'll get an offer to create the page.
