The owners of Tagg and Filadelfio at the Gardens know about the flooding
problem – ask them if they would rather have stream water or storm water
in their premises!
Otago Regional Council's 100-Year Flood Protection Scheme for Leith &
Lindsay streams - Estimated cost - over $21 million. Enormous work -
widen and deepen those streams so they can cope with the (estimated) 100
year flood and (largely) a 200 year one.
There are terrifying photos in their booklet, of the 1929 flood when the
authorities panicked and let Sullivans Dam go all at once!
But the low-lying areas will still be flooded! If there were enough
water to overflow the present banks how would the storm water system
cope with it?
If our “too-much-water” money goes to protecting us from something that
*may* happen there won't be enough left to pay for what *does* happen -
on 7 February 2005 for instance:
“We now know that around 24 millimetres of rain fell on the city in 15
minutes. This is a very unusual weather event for Dunedin. In fact,
according to Raineffects hydrologist, Dave Stewart this deluge was a
one-in-150 year, or even a one-in-300 year, occurrence for the city.
Our stormwater system is designed for 1-in-10 year magnitude
thunderstorms, which is in line with national standards.”

Is the Leith-Lindsay scheme necessary? Is it desirable? Is it the best
use of our money? Is the landscape destruction justified?
---> Is this the best use of our money? <---

Yes. I'd rather put the money into insurance. Oh wait, I *am* insured.
a lot of the bores have dryed up because of all the coal mines we have
around 10 in this shire that use ground water and that much of it they have
lowered the water by around 60 meters over the last 10 years
and sorry folks we have had rain on 11 days so far this year 2mm here is
rain notice I said on 11 days not rained for 11 days
oh and by the way isnt the lower end of the leith its natural flood plain
just because you put concrete there dosent mean its the way the water wants
to go
