This may have changed - but years ago one of the directories - and I *think*
it was the UBD one - used to have a section in it - that would list the phone
numbers and then (from memory) just a last name. I also vaguely remember
that it only had the first 5 numbers of the number (this being when 7 digit
#'s weren't in)

Is there such a thing as a "reverse phone book", where you can look up
123-4567 and find out it belongs to James Fucknuckle of 28 Snotpheasant
Street, Anytown?

(I seem to recall some mention of this topic in the last six months or so
in the newsgroups, but I didn't save the article unfortunately)

I have just been given an Auckland phone number, and wish to work out
where it is. The number begins with 522, so I assume it is somewhere like
Mt Wellington, Ellerslie, Penrose, Panmure.

Or do I have to spend hours looking through the phone book for a number
522-xxxx ?

All email sent to my inca address will fail, however I can now be
contacted via an intermediary : gem at tos pl net. I would like to
apologise to the genuine respondents that this may inconvenience.

Yes it was the UBD and no it had all of the phone number and the first

One day while perusing the net I found the following revelation:

Ą think telecom can do that.

Um, you could always call it and ask. :)

There are many people with the phone prefix 522- in the area between
Portland Road and Meadowbank Road, Remuera.

I heard that you can buy the phone book from Telecom on CD, and
that someone had a program that could search it for anything you
want, including the phone number you are after.

in less than 1 min...

Dial it and ask.

Sorry, I guess you were looking for a more helpful reply?

I've listed (some of?) the areas below in case people want to print it
out and keep it for future reference.

Note that :
(a) I don't think this list is complete.
(b) I believe that nowadays you can keep your existing number (using
call divert?) even though you may move to a completely different area,
which would make such a list redundant.

However, FWIW, some Auckland phone numbers starting with .... are in

The Trade and Exchange has a phone number prefix guide which is
printed in every edition. Might be handy to hang on to it.

I think 522 is mostly remuera. However I was in the Greenlane
area (off Gt South Rd, in a street between market road and Green
Lane Foodtown) and my phone number started with 522.

Have a look in the phone book for businesses that are along Remuera
Rd (eg there's a few medical type clinics), Gt South Rd (eg applied
Hearing, Boys brigade, Arthritis foundation, Dilworth School) and
Newmarket.

There was an East Auckland phone book distributed last year or so
which may help you narrow things down. (if you need to borrow one
let me know)

I think the fact that numbers changed from 5 to 6 to 7 digits
caused the numbering to be not so accurate. They probably try
to adhere to a given prefix for the new numbers they give out.

Panmure seems to have a lot of numbers starting with 527

Remember the move from 6 to 7 digits a few years ago was by
inserting a 2 between the first and second digit in East
Auckland IIRC.

regards
Lin

Far as I know the cops are the only ones who have that ability. I'm told
it violates the privacy act, but how it does that I dont know as the
info is freely available.
