MSG Hides Behind 25+ Names, Such As 'Natural Flavouring'
MSG Is Also In Your Favorite Coffee Shops And Drive-Ups

I wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive
obesity epidemic, so did a friend of mine, John Erb.
He was a research assistant at the University of Waterloo in Ontario,
Canada, and spent years working for the government.
He made an amazing discovery while going through scientific journals
for a book he was writing called "The Slow Poisoning of America".
In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese
mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies. No strain of rat
or mice is naturally obese, so the scientists have to create them. They
make these morbidly obese creatures by injecting them with MSG when
they are first born. The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas
creates; causing rats (and humans?) to become obese. They even have a
title for the fat rodents they create: "MSG-Treated Rats".
I was shocked too. I went to my kitchen, checking the cupboards and the
fridge. MSG was in everything: The Campbell's soups, the Hostess
Doritos, the Lays flavoured potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker
Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals,
Kraft salad dressings, especially the 'healthy low fat' ones.
The items that didn't have MSG marked on the product label had
something called ''Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein'', which is just
another name for Monosodium Glutamate.
It was shocking to see just how many of the foods we feed our children
everyday are filled with this stuff. They hide MSG under many different
names in order to fool those who carefully read the ingredient list, so
they don't catch on. (Other names for MSG: 'Accent' - 'Aginomoto' -
'Natural Meet Tenderizer', etc) But it didn't stop there. When our
family went out to eat, we started asking at the restaurants what menu
items had MSG.
Many employees, even the managers, swore they didn't use MSG. But when
we ask for the ingredient list, which they grudgingly provided, sure
enough MSG and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein were everywhere:
Burger King
McDonalds
Wendy's
Taco Bell
And every restaurant like: TGIF, Chilis', Applebees and Denny's use MSG
in abundance.
Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to be the WORST offender: MSG was in
EVERY chicken dish, salad dressing and gravy. No wonder I loved to eat
that coating on the skin, their secret spice was MSG.
So, why is MSG in so may of the foods we eat?
Is it a preservative or a vitamin?? Not according to my friend John. In
the book he wrote, an expose of the food additive industry called "The
Slow Poisoning of America" he said that MSG is added to food for the
addictive effect it has on the human body. http://www.spofamerica.com
Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers lobby
group supporting MSG at: http://www.msgfactscom/facts/msgfact12.html
explains that the reason they add it to food is to make people EAT MORE
OF THEIR PRODUCTS.
A study of the elderly showed that people eat more of the foods it is
added to.The Glutamate Association lobby group says eating more
benefits the elderly, but what does it do to the rest of us? 'Betcha
can't eat just one', takes on a whole new meaning where MSG is
concerned! And we wonder why the nation is overweight?
The MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their
products. It makes people choose their product over others, and makes
people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn't added.
Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an
addictive substance! Since its introduction into the American food
supply fifty years ago, MSG has been added in larger and larger doses
to the pre-packaged meals, soups, snacks and fast foods we are tempted
to eat everyday. The FDA has set no limits on how much of it can be
added to food. They claim it's safe to eat in any amount. How can they
claim it safe when there are hundreds of scientific studies with titles
like these? :-
'The monosodium glutamate (MSG) obese rat as a model for the study of
exercise in obesity'. GobattoCA, Mello MA, Souza CT, Ribeiro IA.Res
Commun Mol Pathol Pharmacol. 2002.
'Adrenalectomy abolishes the food-induced hypothalamic serotonin
release in both normal and monosodium glutamate-obese rats'. Guimaraes
RB, Telles MM, Coelho VB, Mori C, Nascimento CM, Ribeiro Brain Res
Bull. 2002 Aug.
'Obesity induced by neonatal monosodium glutamate treatment in
spontaneously hypertensive rats: an animal model of multiple risk
factors'. Iwase M, Yamamoto M, Iino K, IchikawaK, Shinohara N,
Yoshinari Fujishima Hypertens Res. 1998 Mar.
'Hypothalamic lesion induced by injection of monosodium glutamate in
suckling period and subsequent development of obesity'. Tanaka K,
Shimada M, Nakao K, Kusunoki Exp Neurol. 1978 Oct.
Yes, that last study was not a typo, it WAS written in 1978. Both the
"medical research community" and "food manufacturers" have known about
MSG's side effects for decades! Many more studies mentioned in John
Erb's book link MSG to Diabetes, Migraines and headaches, Autism, ADHD
and even Alzheimer's. But what can we do to stop the food manufactures
from dumping fattening and addictive MSG into our food supply and
causing the obesity epidemic we now see?
Even as you read this, G. W. Bush and his corporate supporters are
pushing a Bill through Congress called the "Personal Responsibility in
Food Consumption Act" also known as the "Cheeseburger Bill", this
sweeping law bans anyone from suing food manufacturers, sellers and
distributors. Even if it comes out that they purposely added an
addictive chemical to their foods. Read about it for yourself at:
http://www.yahoo.com. The Bill has already been rushed through the
House of Representatives, and is due for the same rubber stamp at
Senate level. It is important that Bush and his corporate supporters
get it through before the media lets everyone know about 'MSG, the
intentional Nicotine for food'.
Several months ago, John Erb took his book and his concerns to one of
the highest government health officials in Canada. While sitting in the
Government office, the official told him "Sure, I know how bad MSG is,
I wouldn't touch the stuff." But this top level government official
refused to tell the public what he knew.
The big media doesn't want to tell the public either, fearing legal
issues with their advertisers. It seems that the fallout on fast food
industry may hurt their profit margin. The food producers and
restaurants have been addicting us to their products for years, and now
we are paying the price for it. Our children should not be cursed with
obesity caused by an addictive food additive. But what can I do about
it?... I'm just one voice.
What can I do to stop the poisoning of our children, while our
governments are insuring financial protection for the industry that is
poisoning us.
This e-mail is going out to everyone I know in an attempt to tell you
the truth that the corporate owned politicians and media won't tell
you. The best way you can help to save yourself and your children from
this drug-induced epidemic, is to forward this email to everyone. With
any luck, it will circle the globe before politicians can pass the
legislation protecting those who are poisoning us. The food industry
learned a lot from the tobacco industry. Imagine if big tobacco had a
bill like this in place before someone blew the whistle on Nicotine?
If you are one of the few who can still believe that MSG is good for
us, and you don't believe what John Erb has to say, see for yourself.
Go to the National Library of Medicine, at http://www.pubmed.com. Type
in the words "MSG Obese" and read a few of the 115 medical studies that
appear.
We the public, do not want to be rats in one giant experiment and we do
not approve of food that makes us into a nation of obese, lethargic,
addicted sheep, feeding the food industry's bottom line, while waiting
for the heart transplant, diabetic induced amputation, blindness or
other obesity induced, life threatening disorders. With your help we
can put an end to this poison. Do your part in sending this message out
by word of mouth, e-mail or by distribution of this print-out to all
your friends all over the world and stop this 'Slow Poisoning of
Mankind' by the packaged food industry.
Blowing the whistle on MSG is our responsibility, get the word out.

It's easier than that. People just eat too much, and exercise too little

Just because something is beyond your comprehension doesn't mean
it is scientific.
Kook conspiracy theory website, best avoided.
But you know they're right here. Hey maybe you're on the phone now to
your stockbroker to offload those fast food company shares?
Yup, its gotta be the MSG making them fat, what else could it POSSIBLY
be?! </sarcasm>
MSG is naturally occuring in all sorts of things, including tomato
products; and I don't see that many obese italians :-P
Yet another case of someone looking for a magic solution to a complex
problem.

People allergic to it can be made very ill. I think they call it the Chinese

How about food from Australia?

to insist on no ADDED MSG and if you see them adding this, demand your

My sister in laws husband (formerly my brother) had a massive gout

The # 1 reason for the obesity *epidemic* in US...and in other
countries as well...is that people are eating more and exercising
less.
In America, the diests of many people tend to consist of a lot of
'prepared foods' , retaurant food and take-a-ways. Most of this food
is cheap...and loaded with fat and calories. As a result, their blood
pressure and cholesterol is also high. Lack of exercise also plays a
part in this.
As part of my successful weightloss program, I started eating lots of
veges and fruit and went back to making meals from scratch using
healthy ingredients. As a result, my shopping bill has almost doubled
if not tripled. For example, instead of using standard mince
(hamburger here) that costs between US 99 cents to US 1.29 a lb...I
buy the extra lean mince that costs between US$3.68 to US$4.48 a lb.
Foods here are also loaded with 'High Fructose Cane Syrup' which makes
everything very sweet. As and example, my daughter, when she moved
back to NZ, noticed the difference between Yoplait yoghurt in the US
and NZ......the Yoplait yoghurt in NZ is a lot tarter and less sweet
than the US version. Not sure about the calorie difference, but the US
version does contain high fructose cane syrup which is a lot sweeter
than sugar.

I am no expert on the subject. I understand MSG is used to enhance flavour.
That is enough to create addiction. Who would eat chocolate if it didn't
taste so good? Sugar is another flavour enhancer. It makes us want to eat
cakes, biscuits etc. I notice cakes etc. we make at home never have quite
the great flavour of shop bought. That is because we don't put MSG into our
cooking.
Obesity is caused by eating too much and not getting enough exercise plus
eating too much of the wrong foods, too many hamburgers. I've had a lifetime
of watching people. During the 1960s I lived in an area of a lot of old
people. It was a working class area. The old men had been hard physical
workers during their early years before the advent of machinery. There were
a lot in their 70s who were lean and healthy. Nowadays few people work
really physically hard. I watched a man loading bricks on a truck. He pushed
a little lever up and down while a lift did all the work. He is probably as
much in danger of heart attacks as a clerical worker.
Incidentally backing up the value of exercise a survey was done about 30
years ago on heart disease according to occupation. The top of the list for
health were mail deliverers cycling around town all day. The wrost were
mangers and other desk jockeys.
Obesity could be cured in society in a year. Just make all food unpalatable
so people will only eat to avoid starvation. Then watch the weight come
down.

There was a programme from Britain about sugar added to food there. What we
call Dairy Foods, chocolate type creamy puddings, were loaded with spoonfuls
of sugar. The sugar was downplayed in ads and the small quantity of fruit
added played up. Then the products were advertised on kids' programmes. Some
parents were shocked when they found out how much sugar was added. Just one
pot of the stuff contained the whole daily sugar intake recommended by
nutritionalists.

Like the products that scream "98% fat free" but fail to point out
loaded with sugar

And the collapse of the share value of the processed food companies.
These companies are in business not to provide food but to gain profit
and dividends, The food, as such, is simply bait, providing the means
to these ends.
Fat, salt, sugar. These three killers are included in the highest
doses they can get away with and, in fact, the mix is scientifically
controlled to give the maximum "taste" appeal to the consumer. Eat an
NZ Anzac biscuit, say. As you do so, think "salt" and, oh boy, you
suddenly realise just how *salty* rather than sweet they really are!
BTW, did you know that the meat in McDonalds hamburgers is
deliberately processed to remove all beef flavour? It's the bun
(stodge + sugar + salt), the salad (sugar + salt + fat dressing) that
are controlled so tightly that, in combination with the burger
texture, any consumer daft enough to eat their appllling shit can
expect that same shit to taste exactly the same in Paris, Johannesburg
or Adelaide as it does in New York.
Brand identity is not enough. It's brand *consistency* that's the key
to profiting from such globalised muck.
So, whenever I see people entering a McDonald's I think to myself,
"Battery hens lining up at the trough in dumb expectation of that same
bland, awful standardised feed".
We tried their junk once. Never again!
But you are not force fed this additive, you choose what you eat thank
goodness.
If you cook vegetables and meat from scratch, make your own sauces etc, it
should not be a problem.
I have to do that because we are sensitive to garlic and thats in just about
every pre packaged savoury item these days.
So I must be missing out on the MSG as well. Yippee.

All you need are meat, fish, vegetable, fruit, bread, spices and jam. Get
off your arse and learn to cook.

Since when did food manufacturers declare the MSG content of food*?

And remember that (for e.g.) the improving flavour of ripening tomatoes
is due to the rising levels of naturally occurring MSG. It's a natural
component in a wide range of foods, like mushrooms, some cheeses, yeast
extracts (Marmite) seaweeds, fermented soy products.
* I had a rat through our pantry to see if I could find any MSG (E621).
The nearest was another flavour enhancer E627 disodium guanylate in a
Continental Chicken Tonight.
The strongest objection to MSG is that food manufacturers may use it
instead of genuine flavours. If you don't like it, avoid manufactured
foods and any that it is present in naturally.

Rats are bloody clever animals !
I had a baby rat here for a while, unless of course it was a fucken
huge mouse, brown in color, looked not at all like the rats i have
seen on rubbish tips etc. It appeared sort of friendly even.
I figured the poor sod was not doing anything majorly wrong, well no
evidence of it anyway, so I let it have its luck in a housefull of
three cats, all be they well fed.
Wrong. Out of town on business for couple of weeks, get home and ring
the matriach to thank her for feeding the kids, and she calmly tells
me she has laid rodent bait in two places.
Never did see the clean looking friendly rat again

Apparently, the high allergen content of peanuts is related to the
roasted peanuts favoured in the US (& NZ), rather than the boiled
peanuts used in Asia. Chinese who have very low allergies to peanuts
develop reactions if they move to the US and switch to the typical US
diet, but don't if they stick to their traditional diet.
So Pad Thai probably wouldn't set anything off (unless the eater's
immune system was already totally stuffed.)
we used to eat masses of boiled peanuts, street sellers flogged them
