We are seeing some packet loss of up to 18% on paths via MCI backbone
trunks connecting through the Hayward hub - this is perhaps the busiest
part of The Internet and affects links to parts of the MCI net and areas
to which these links supply transit. The basic problem is that the T3
(45mbps) trunks are becoming saturated due to the enormous loadings on the
"front line" parts of the backbone. MCI plans upgrades of their backbone
to OC3 (155mbps) - this should take place in March or April at the latest,
but router hardware upgrades and tuning planned in a few days should
help. We will post more information as it come to hand.
