Guidelines for posting to nz.net.announce
=========================================
nz.net.announce is a moderated forum for the posting of important
announcements about the status of the international link(s) and important
services in New Zealand. In addition various Informational posts and FAQs
are also posted to the group along with Requests for discussion and Call
for Votes for nz.* groups. In most cases followups for posts are set to
nz.net.admin.
nz.net.announce is intended for announcements only, discussion and
questions about services should take place in other newsgroups (usually
nz.net.admin), posts must be made by someone 'in authority' w.r.t a
particular service. Comments by users that such-and-such a service seems
to be down are not accepted and should be sent to nz.net.admin.
While announcements about new services are accepted the group is not
intended to become an advertising medium.
The following people may post directly to nz.net.admin without going
through the moderators.

Vital services
==============
These are services that would directly and immediately effect a majority
of New Zealand users. Posts may be made if there is *any* disruption (or
potential disruption) to their operation.
They include:
* The main International links run by NZGate, IBM and Compuserve.
* Major Backbone links around New Zealand such as from Auckland
University to Waikato University.
* Important Name Servers such as ns1.waikato.ac.nz.
* The Main Cache servers.
Important Services
==================
These are services that are sufficiently important to a large number of
NZ users. While they are likely to be rapidly missed other work could
take place or some sort of alternative service could provide coverage.
Notice should be given of scheduled down-times or explanations of
unexpected ones. However unlike with Vital services a blow-by-blow
account should not be given of problems.
These services include:
* The main Usenet news servers at Waikato and Victoria Universities.
* archie.nz
* Network links serving large sites or several smaller ones.
* The Undernet IRC server at iconz.co.nz.
* Machines providing user access at large sites.
( ie the main PPP server at iconz.co.nz )
* Major WWW and ftp archives.
Major Services
==============
Addition services that have ready substitutes at other sites. Post should
only be made informing of disruptions lasting at least several hours.
These include:
* Misc FTP and WWW sites.
* NTP and other low priority servers.
Informational Posts
===================
These are regular posts that compile statistics or other information.
Posters should keep the Subject: constant to enable users to killfile
them if they wish.
