Hi,

Posting this for the benefit of Aucklanders as well as out of towners...

If you happen to be taken by the urge to have fast-food DO NOT experience
the DRIVE THRU at Wendy's, Dominion Rd.

The order taking system falls over so badly you won't believe it. I (have in
the past ) often frequent the place out of convenience and have tolerated
the odd missed item but last night was the last straw.

I ordered a mozzarella chicken burger combo with a Coke & a hamburger

Go to 1st window... paid the guy $10.65(! over charged by one $)... sends me
to pickup and they hand a single burger out the window. HALLO.... (huge
argument ensues).

I ask for the manager. Answer "he's very busy", I tell them the guy at the
pay window cocked up so i'm not going to move....

Hell breaks lose. Another person appears and asks what's wrong (this one can
speak understandable English) . Eventually another bag of food is almost
thrown at me plus a drink (FANTA?). Window slams shut. No sorry or anything.

I know for sure now that because a BURGER FUEL has opened directly across
the road i'll be going THERE in the future.

Wendy's... you suck.

... (and i've always wondered why the fat Wendy's telly adds character NEVER
EATS THE PRODUCT in the add).

Rant over

Morris

Oh boy! I think i would have gone in the shop because 1) I don't like fanta
& that wasn't what I ordered 2) I don't owe Wendys $1 extra for bad service
or for anything.. The nerve, "thanks for your money, here's half of what
you ordered, now piss off". Arrrrrr. I particularly like ordering the Taco
Salad & they forget the chili. Yum: Cold salad & corn chips for tea! I
havent been in over a year so I guess I got the message.

Why don't you go to the supermarket and buy a nice steak and salad for the

part of going out to get a feed is the 10 or 15min break i have away from
the job without anyone being able to contact me. This is the only break i
get in a 9 hr shift shut indoors, no windows to look out of.

Agreed though Wendy's is crap food.

I think you are missing my point in my rant. The thread is that in NZ making
a complaint about bad service just results in more BS from pathetic badly
trained staff. Kiwis are renowned for NOT standing up.

In the US they'd bust their ass to put things right or probably wind up
fired.

You appear to be one who'd just put up with it and let the culture continue.

It's the only excuse you give yourself silly. Take sandwiches and go for a
15min walk. Save yourself heaps of money too. $40per week equals the funds
needed for a nice break somewhere warm in the middle of winter.
Why fund the sleek cats when you can be sleek too.

I hope you're not talking about those supermarket coleslaws... they're
lethal.

Just read the consumer reports on the bacterial levels found in those
little witches brews at certain times of the week.

The last time I was silly enough to buy some supermarket coleslaw I
was violently ill and the bag itself blew up like a balloon. Never
again!

So will you stand up and be complaining to the manager?

Why not write to Head Office?

You are the customer from hell, didn't they offer to make you up a table?
It would have taken all of 2mins waiting time, instead, you drove around for
an hour, steam billowing out of the window and out of your cell phone. If
it's knowing the universe doesn't revolve around you that you needed to
realize, how many more examples do you want?

Sure there's bad service around, no doubt about it, but as you can see from
the driving standards on the road, people expect instant service to a
standard that doesn't hold them up more than 2 secs and they like to pay
peanuts so there are two sides to this story.

On the road, some people nowdays pay scant respect for other users, same as
customers from hell who pay no respect for the people giving the service,
some of whom, I agree, don't deserve any, but some customers assume from the
outset that service people equal bad people and treat them like scum and
still expect to be treated royally. Totally absurd.

I am a semi-regular customer of that branch of Wendys (usually getting
a bit of late lunch before I go and visit my elderly mum for a few
hours once a week)

Although I've never used their drive through, I've never observed any
such problems while dining in. (Depending on ones position within the
restaurant, one can overhear/oversee the drive-through)

A small piece of advice: your wording sounds like someone who didn't
get their way, and is throwing a tantrum.

A mistake on Wendys part should be brought to their attention, but
screaming "I want the manager!" and throwing a tantrum is not the way
to solve the problem.

[end quote]

That shows that you'd been obnoxious to them, so they're just trying
to get rid of you, and get on to a nicer customer. The response you
got mimicked the way you dealt with them.

How would you have responded to such a customer if the situation was
reversed, and you were the staff member on the drive-through window?

Remember : "Treat others how you would like to be treated"

Simply move the car through to the drive-through holding/waiting bay
(I assume there was another car behind yours, so you wont be holding
up a queue of hungry Aucklanders), get out, and walk into the
restaurant, and have a quiet word with the person behind the counter.
Say something like "I think you've made a mistake", show them the
order you received (and a docket if you got one when you got your
order), tell them what you ordered (they should be able to look this
up as a "drive-through order history") and you'll find that they'll be
happier to fix the order, and you'll be treated much better (you might
even get a "sorry we made a mistake" bonus of a free upsize of your
order or drinks)

I have had a few problems with fast food chain stores over the last 20
years or so, (the most recent was about a couple of months ago
[incidentally it was also at the Dominion Road Wendys store]). She'd
given me my change, and gone off to get my order, and I checked my
change - it was 30c short, so I pointed this out to her when she came
back with my order about a minute later, and let her check it, and the
till, and she called the manager who unlocked the till, and I was
given the small shortfall. (a 20c piece had fallen in amongst the
50s) The whole thing was sorted out amicably in under two minutes.
I've been back there a few times since, and no problems have arisen
since - and the same girl was still working there a few weeks back
when I was last there

Yup, you booked.... as you said, it's a BUSY restaurant and they probably
have people who book and don't show... so when someone is more than a couple

Thanks for the lesson in negotiation. I'll apply it to other situations.

I guess i've developed a different attitude when it comes to fast food
drive thru environments. It aint exactly rocketry now is it?
I've foolishly believed they were in business to supply
their customer quickly and accurately. Most of them do but
for some reason the Dom rd one just doesn't seem to be able to do it.
It's not the 1st time i've had problems, wrong items, items missing,
mis-comunications etc.

In the industry i work in if i don't do exactly what our customers are
needing and expecting i sure as eggs wouldn't be working there for long.

I went into Burger King recently. Their menu gives you a choice of
small, medium or large combos. I ordered a small combo, the person
behind the counter asked me if I wanted to 'super size'
it.....sighhhhh....

You are kidding , right?

I have had some extremely bad service in the US and have had a devil
of a time getting 'things put right'. I have also had instances where
a store has bent over backwards to 'put things right'.

Both of the above have happened in the US and NZ....though I have had
more bad service here in the US.

That's just common sense -- fleas and worms are often "fellow

All i can say is wow, how long since you left NZ? Seems then that the
particular Domininon Rd outlet is doing everything right by your expected
standard.

All i know is that when i've been in the US and found reason to have
Fast-Food, the person serving me was really 'on to it' with fantastic
communication skills, thus doing a mighty fine job.

The Wendy's outlet i'm bringing everyone's attention to was pretty good some
2 years ago when it opened. Now they seem to consistently miss items or hand
you a wrong order. It means everytime you visit that you have to hold up the
cue and check the bag they've handed out. When you have to ask for the
corrections they come across as being really stressed out, even rude. It
seems it starts with the staff member who simply can't communicate properly
with you in the 1st place over their talkback system at the drive thru.

Nevermind, after my RANT here i'm never going to have the problem again
because there are plenty of other food places in the area and waiting a few
minutes extra is fine.

I wasn't treating anyone like a moron. The guy on the cash counter (whom i
assume does the talkback) just could not understand me and kept allowing
that auto(?) slidding window to close as i tried to talk to him. That was
rude. That made it worse. I never shouted or yelled or had any tantrum
(like others have said in this thread). I admit that i said i'd keep my car
put if they didn't hand me what i'd paid for. That seemd to hurry things up.

I shouldn't have had to stoop to such tactics and the fact the manger wasn't
available came across as a fob-off.

Wendy's is a service industry, like where i work. If you can't do it then
you shouldn't be there or the very least, a bit of decent training might be

My father used to cut my hair and on my first (or at any rate one of
my first few) visits to an outside barber, he asked me the traditional
"will there be anything else sir", thus quite possibly offering me the
wherewithal to commit an illegal act. (I don't know if it was ever
true in NZ, but in the 50s in England when a barber said "anything
else" after a haircut he meant "do you need any condoms?")

I was about 12. "Progrrammed" is right.

Of course you would - how dare any one not treat you like a queen.
You would not think of being nice, decent etc - accepting that others
sometimes make a mistake - why would you - you NEVER it your
self - do you? You are so much better than "those" people who
serve you.

Actually he knew who you were. He was told what you were like and
did not want you to come to his place. He has standards that preclude
people like you. He did not phone back for a very good reason - look
in the mirror - reflect on your attitude - work out if you would want you
in as a customer. This guy knows what is good for his business and
that is for you not to be there.

What time of day was this and what day is it?
At $10 you can eat quite well at other places that isn't Wendy's,
KFC or McDs. Obviously time of day and the actual day itself
makes a difference in the variety of choices you will have.

Here's some meal ideas from around that area (if you don't cook):
1. Foodtown
There's a 24 hour foodtown nearby. If you are spending $10 for a meal
at Wendy's, you'll get a very nice bag of soup or one of the pre-cooked
meals from the fridge section.

There's some reasonably tasty food there.

If there's no microwave at home to heat it up then perhaps it isn't an
option.

If it is before 10pm or so, you could probbaly get a whole roast
chicken (still hot) from the hot food section (between the bread
and deli section).

2. Kebabs
There's a few kebab places around the area depending on which direction
you start from and what time of day it is.
For example there's one at the corner of Mt Eden and Valley Rd that
is often open till around midnight. Otherwise the ones along dominion
rd from Wendy's tend to close by 10pm.

There's a 24 hour kebab place near the corner of K'rd and Mercury Lane

3. Star Mart
there's a 24 hour star mart opposite that Wendy's. You can get the
frozen meals in the freezer section and perhaps even soups to heat up
SOme star marts have microwaves where youc an heat up the food.
This is where it is an advantage to buying from foodtown if you don't
have a microwave at home (or work).

4. 2 Monkeys
a vietnamese place a few doors away from the Wendy's. Open till 10pm

5 Chinese diner
There's one a few doors away from that wendy's that is open till 3 or
4am. They can easily do a fried rice or something you won't mind
eating (sweet and sour something on riceetc). There's another a few
kms away (just after the balmoral rd lights on dominion rd) that is open
till 2am.

If you are looking for food before 10pm there's a few more chinese
diners along dominion rd to choose from.

6. Burgerfuel
opposite Wendys. Lovely burgers. $10 gets you a huge burger.
Unfortunately they are shut by 10pm (around there) unless it is a fri
or sat evening.

FWIW of the takeaways (KFC, MCDs etc) Wendy's is probably the
one place you are likely to be able to have an healthier meal.
They have salads and baked potato.

Well that is reasonably early...

I think the perception with drivethroughs is you save time because
you don't have to park and get out of the car to stand in line. IMHO
in reality you are in line in your car and sometimes it can go quite
slowly.

In fact I seem to recall a couple of occasions in the distant past
when I had got out of my car to order at the counter rather than
join the queue of cars waiting to go through the drive through.

It sounds like you can phone up an order and go pick it up. What I
suggest is to collect takeaway menus and then ring up about 10 - 15
mins before your break to order. Let them know when you'll be there to
pick it up. What I suggest is over the next few meal times you spend a
min visiting a place to pick up their takeaway menu.

The following has takeaway menus you can take with you
Max - a Malaysian and chinese diner. It is in the Eden Quarter shops.
You can drive in and park outside to pick up your food. They have
takeaway menus.
There's a set of takeaways, diners and restaurants just after the lights
(as you head away from the city) at the corner of Valley rd and dominion rd.
Parking should be ok. At most you may have to park and walk across the
road. It includes a chinese takeaway (that makes burgers, fish and
chips etc), an indian restaurant - Divas, and a kebab shop

Well there's lots of meals. head to the end where the yoghurts and
milk are. That's where the frozen meals are and the fridge section
for meals you can heat up. Take the express queue.

well that one is a drive through kebab place. It was (ages ago) once
a petrol station.

>> There's a 24 hour kebab place near the corner of K'rd and Mercury Lane

Actually near that corner is also a subways.

>> 4. 2 Monkeys
>> a vietnamese place a few doors away from the Wendy's. Open till 10pm

pick up their takeaway menu. There's a chinese takeaway next to it too.
There's parking right next to it and so it'll be a fast in and out
if you ordered ahead. The chinese takeaway has ready made hot food I
believe under hot lamps.

well if you find that ok then you'll have no problems with the food
places just after the lights nor 2 monkeys and the chinese takeaway next
to it.

cartwheel of a coin worth an eighth of a pound, or 25 cents) on the counter.
If you were lucky, you got a chemist that gave you the Silvertex you were
looking for. If, however, you got the young female assistant who had
obviously just graduated summa cum laude in nubility class, you bought yet
another toothbrush to add to your growing collection.

Until the glorious day that it dawned on me that if they were selling the
stuff, they couldn't be that bothered about it, & so I just asked out loud
for 'a packet of rubber johnnies'. And got it.

And very useful they were.

Yes if you can't do the job then go else were. I'm sick of people who have a
job and just
can't do it correctly.
I haven't had problems with Wendy's myself but Mc Donald's is another
story..... And there
salads are not fresh by any means.
PIG SLOPS = Mc Donald's.

I have decided to try out Burger King and so far find them far better.
