New Zealand BBS (Bulletin-Board-System) List
--------------------------------------------
Release 1.1, July 04 1993

Compiled, Maintained and Published by:
Daniel Ayers
Mirth Control BBS
Christchurch NZ

******************** WARNING ********************
This is the first edition of the new BBS LIST. It
should NOT yet be regarded as a complete listing
of all NZ bulletin boards, since many SYSOPs are
yet to hear of the new list and discover that the
information in the old list has not been carried
over into the new list. Please distribute this
list as widely as you can and tell as many SYSOPs
as possible about it, but for the next month or
two at least it will continue to be incomplete.
*************************************************

This document is a list of those Bulletin Board Systems (BBS') in New Zealand
who have requested that their details be published. Systems who have not
specifically requested a listing are not included. A separate document (the
NZ BBS LIST "information kit" / FAQ) details how to submit information to this
list, how to interpret it's contents and describes briefly how it is produced.

It seems Daniel is unable or unwilling to take other people's
regional lists and deal with them, even after having been sent a
couple of copies....

BTW Daniel. Don't waste bandwidth. One copy is sufficient, not a TXT
and LZH copy.

MANAWATU / HOROWHENUA public computer bulletin board list. (*)

(This list is current until 1 August 1993. Do not use after 1 September 1993)

(ie: The areas covered by the Manawatu Telephone Directory)

NOTE: There at least another 10 private bbs's in the area that we know of.

FWIW: Sonya Chang is sent a copy of every regional list I get,
and is more than happy with the format of most of them.

I don't know about the others, but my list was complete from Day one.
I took the time to track down and call EVERY public system in the area
before I published my first list. That included hauling in every
partial list on those systems and verifying the numbers and names.

What you are proposing is running a list gathering service in
parallel with existing ones. Can't you accept that local lists are
probably the most accurate way of getting information?

The first sentence is an unqualified assumption, the second is clearly
true. As I have not yet described in any detail how I will be updating
the list, I'm wondering how you know so much about this?

If you'd stopped to read what I've distributed closely enough, you'll see
that there are provisions for checking up on systems and updating
information. Special provision has been made for regular checks.

You are judging the BBS LIST based upon invalid assumptions of your own,
and after only the first initial release (clearly marked as a 'beta
release').

You clearly don't like my list (and/or me, whatever), it seems to me that
you are looking for excuses to support this point of view. I can find no
other explaination for your extreme lack of understanding.

> If you can't accept the fact that we spend a reasonable amount of

I think that's rather obvious, and I don't see the point behind your
comment, other than it being another opportunity to be abusive.

> I don't know about the others, but my list was complete from Day one.

Let me get this straight, Alan. Are you telling us that your list is
complete (and perfect)? A little unrealistic, methinks.

> I took the time to track down and call EVERY public system in the area
> before I published my first list.

Are you suggesting that this is a practical approach for a national list?

It's easy for you (and Pat, and Craig). You're all working in your local area,
which makes communication with SYSOPs much easier. However, I am operating
nationally and I have to rely on networks, word-of-mouth and local agents
to spread the word. You don't seem to understand this.

> What you are proposing is running a list gathering service in
> parallel with existing ones. Can't you accept that local lists are
> probably the most accurate way of getting information?

You have stubbornly failed to understand the new BBS LIST, despite a
volume of information distributed with it and a number of quite patient
and detailed messages from me about it.

No, I don't agree that repeating information second-hand from a local list
is the best way to gather info. For example, ask Craig about the errors I
found in one of his earlier lists in about 10 minutes. I can't accept that
filtering information through one or more levels is magically going to
increase it's accuracy and the very process won't make it more up-to-date.

And if you'd understood anything that I had said to you you would realise
that there are other major goals of the NZ BBS LIST that require the
information be collected in this semi-automatic manner; basically that the
list is semi-automated and can be generated by computer very very quickly
(60 seconds), in many formats very easily and without any manual (error
prone) editing.

You have totally ignored these, so I'm left wondering if you refuse to
consider that a new (better?) way of maintaining bbs lists could be found,
and what's more you seem to be very angry that I would dare try. Hence,
comments like:

> Your whole attitude smacks of "Fido-weenie power freak"

Alan, you seem to be looking for a fight. I'm not interested. I am going
to continue to work on improving the NZ BBS LIST in the hope that it will
become a truly useful service for BBS people all over the country. If you
don't like that/it/me/whatever then I'm afraid you'll just have to put up
with that/it/me/whatever.

Flames will be ignored.

Daniel.

No. We are suggesting that people who have produced local lists have
ALREADY done this, therefore it would make sense to use the information
in those lists.

I think we do realise this. And it is why we are suggesting that
you use local lists along with an option for system operators to
override the info with their own details.

Let's be realistic about this, if you want a comprehensive list then
it makes sense to merge in the local lists. The local lists will
never be 100% correct, but I would say they are at least 95% correct.

>You have totally ignored these, so I'm left wondering if you refuse to
>consider that a new (better?) way of maintaining bbs lists could be found,

I disagree that it is better. I have a similar system for the Wellington
List were system operators can send in updates which are processed
automatically. Occasionally a few send them in.

If I don't call each BBS every month then I miss out that they have
upgraded their modem, added an extra line, or closed down.

I think that you seem to think that the set of programs that you've
written is the answer to everything and that anyone who disagrees is
therefore wrong.

Obviously, I don't want to spend a lot of time compiling a NZ BBS List,
that's why I (and every other bbslist maker here who has read your
message) am suggesting that you merge sysop updates with the local
list for that area.

Hey, I don't like you either!... and you don't like me... so what..
who cares! :-), I do understand though.

[alan wrote...]

>> I don't know about the others, but my list was complete from Day one.

Mine wasn't. The whole chch area was a shambles when I started up
a list, many many part time bbs's appearing one week, going the
next, pointers on bbs's about the existance of others was very minimal,
the easiest and most efficient way of me doing it was to release it
on 1 bbs, a very busy one, and beg people to send me any info they
knew was missing. I repeated this every couple of days for a week or
so, and gained a more complete list.. at least the numbers of
the bbs's so I could ring them and get more.
That was quite some time ago, when networks were a rare thing, thesedays
most bbs's are on at least one.

As I said to Daniel in email, I can understand what he's doing, and
why. I don't totally agree with it, but the theory behind it is
good. He's getting the sysop of each BBS to place their own
entry in the nationwide list, to a standard format, which ensures it's
accurate at the time of entry. That's where I see the problem,
I honestly don't think sysops will bother to keep it updated when
they change things around (every few weeks it seems).
Only time will tell how it works out.

>is the best way to gather info. For example, ask Craig about the errors I

Very minimal errors, noone's going to mind the odd typo!, Even the
sysop's placing their enteries in the list are vulnerable to
that mistake! Even after you told me 2 of the errors I still
couldn't see them!
Every list will contain some errors... that's life!

hey, even I think that power goes to Daniel's head, but I don't think
that has much to do with his list.

I'll be forwarding the ChCh BBS list onto Pat shortly after I add a few
changes to it, If Pat can get a list out quickly, this will be good
for the mean time while Daniel's is in it's growing stage.
Once his contains 100% of the enteries contained in the regional lists,
there won't be a need for 2 lists, but at the moment there is.

Craig.

I agree that such an approach would get more systems into the list faster, but
as I have explained it is also contrary to some of the other goals of the list.

In particular, it would involve extra handling of the information (perhaps error
prone) but more importantly other sources of information don't always have the
type of information that I would like for the BBS LIST.

Also, importing other lists on a national scale would make the list more
difficult to maintain. I really don't need that.

> Let's be realistic about this, if you want a comprehensive list then

Correctness is only part of it. (It would be unrealistic for me to suggest
that my methods of collecting information are magically 100% error-free).

Really, I am more concerned with the mismatch in the type of information
stored by various lists - and the process of getting it into the national
list.

> I disagree that it is better. I have a similar system for the Wellington
> List were system operators can send in updates which are processed
> automatically. Occasionally a few send them in.

If you will list them anyway, there is no incentive for them to send you their
information.

In my list, they will not be listed if they don't. That's an incentive, and
it's also their decision. Some systems do NOT _want_ to be listed. (I
don't know why, but that's their business).

> If I don't call each BBS every month then I miss out that they have
> upgraded their modem, added an extra line, or closed down.

Right, well I simply cannot do that.

However, I have approached a few people to assist in collecting information.
Some of these people will go around giving SYSOPs the forms to fill in and
collecting them afterwards, others will operate a guest user similar to
mine - but in other areas around the country, so that non-networked SYSOPs
can contribute their information without making a toll call.

This way I can make it easier for people to contribute information to the
list without compromising the consistency (etc) of the information.

This is the way I prefer to increase the number of systems listed. If
it turns out it doesn't work (after a month or two) then I may be forced
to reconsider.

> I think that you seem to think that the set of programs that you've

No, I think that remark is unjustified.

Just remember that you (and certain other people) are making a lot of final
judgements about the BBS LIST after seeing only the first edition. You
haven't given it a chance yet.

Daniel.

And my first edition wasn't perfect either, however I intend to improve it.

> I honestly don't think sysops will bother to keep it updated when
> they change things around (every few weeks it seems).

I think there's a lot of assumptions being generated here by some people;
pretty much all of my statements have been WRT the way that information gets
into the list in the first place.

Nowhere have I stated that small updates will only be accepted on the form.
This is not the case, in fact a number of updates have been processed already
in response to "hey, daniel ..." type messages.

For example, you notified me that one SYSOP had managed to enter one of his
phone numbers incorrectly. (This mistake wasn't spotted by him even though
I sent him a copy of his listing in response to his form, as I usually do).
You notified me of this problem, I fixed it. No form, no difficulty, no
problem.

How does this differ from the way you update your information?

As I've already said, provision has been made to have people checking on the
systems occasionally (this is a little more difficult for me, because
of the national scale of my list).

Because the list if brand new there has been little need for this sort of
procedure yet, so little development has gone into it.

Once more, I think this is a case of people judging the list before it has
has a chance to become established.

> Very minimal errors, noone's going to mind the odd typo!

Typos can make a big difference. Refer to the single-character typo
made by one SYSOP in my list ...

> Every list will contain some errors... that's life!

True.

> hey, even I think that power goes to Daniel's head

I wish someone would point out some of this power I'm meant to have, so
I can start taking advantage of it ... all I see is lots of time, lots
of effort and a lot of people complaining. Where's the power?

> but I don't think that has much to do with his list.

True.

> I'll be forwarding the ChCh BBS list onto Pat shortly after I add a few
> changes to it, If Pat can get a list out quickly, this will be good

Adding the regional lists together and distributing them in one package is
a good idea, and a good way to "fill in the gaps" in the next month or two
while the NZ BBS LIST gets up to speed.

However, publishing something else labelled as a "NZ BBS LIST" would lead
to enormous confusion and make my job about 10 time more difficult. In fact
that would be an act of sabotage, and result in fragmenting contributions
to "the national list" across two seperate publications, making both of
them a little worthless. I certainly hope that Pat, Alan and yourself don't
plan to take steps to make your prophecies come true.

> Once his contains 100% of the enteries contained in the regional lists,
> there won't be a need for 2 lists, but at the moment there is.

By that definition, my list will never be up-to-date. Your list didn't
have 100% of the Christchurch systems in mine, did it?

Why not just give the national list a month or two to get established? Don't
tell me that it's incredibly urgent to "fill in the gaps", I saw nobody
panicking for the four months that there was national list at all.

What's the rush? I hope this is not going to descend into becoming a
competitive sport.

Daniel.
