Fitz is a prefix in patronymic surnames of Anglo-Norman origin. This
usage derives from the Norman fiz / filz, pronunciation: /fits/
(cognate with French fils < Latin filius), meaning "son of". In noble
families, this was preposed to the name of the father (e.g. Fitz
Gilbert, meaning "son of Gilbert"), mirroring the Scandinavian
tradition of adding -son after (usually) the father's name.

As usual Wiki only gives half the story Fitz.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Fitz

n. 1. A son; - used in compound names, to indicate paternity, esp. of
the illegitimate sons of kings and princes of the blood; as, Fitzroy, the
son of the king; Fitzclarence, the son of the duke of Clarence.

Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, published 1913 by C. & G. Merriam

I'd go with Webster rather than Wiki that can be changed by any Tom, Dick or
FitzSomeone.

Recall patrick-two-face's incontinence over square brackets awhile ago, where he dredged up some high school (IIRC) website to try and bolster his mistaken understanding (as he ranted and raved).

Patrick-two-face is not adverse to using incomplete 'references' to support his position, and refuses to the see that the very nature of their incompleteness it what renders his argument wrong.

That is but one reason why patrick-two-face is a moron.

Given the stupidity and inability of some posters to comprehend I
repeat in the vain hope that the truth will penetrate their moronic,
shriveled brains.
