However, King severely shot himself in the foot a couple of months ago
when he unwisely got involved in the Paul Holmes "cheeky darkie"
fiasco. Unbelievably, King, who is Maori, came out in SUPPORT of that
most loathsome racist of Newstalk ZB's stable of racists. In an
excruciatingly embarrassing confrontation on Linda Clark's National
Radio programme, a hopelessly outclassed King babbled incoherently
about "free speech" and "political correctness" before being verbally
sliced and diced by Professor Michael Neill and Wally Hirsch.
Today, evidence has come to light that King lacks not only political
understanding and nous, but that he also lacks a sense of humour.
You see, a week or so ago, Jeremy ("Newsboy") Wells, on his new TV
show "Eating Media Lunch", lampooned King's homosexual-baiting comedy
routine. King was by all accounts not amused, and he left the
following message for Wells via the answerphone for the Auckland
University Students' Association radio station 95 BFM....

Who says he's New Zealand's favourite comedian?

Perhaps Mike King does!
It's kind of like Helen Clark crowing about being a victim of her own
success don't you think? :-)

As the Nightline team commented, this spat is funnier than both of the
two antogonists shows put together.
Wonder where this fucking with the wrong person thing comes from?
Who does he think he is?

Probably. He's just a jumped up, wannabe Billy T James with INFINITELY
less talent and ability. :-\

Wouldn't know, I never listen to politicians, they're all as thick as
five short planks. :-)
Oh Jesus Christ, Breen! The Holmes bullshit AGAIN!

And what do you have against free speech or are you one of those PC
Nazis. Have you burnt any books lately.

And has he got the balls?
At least King is willing to front up and be counted, although maybe a
little over the top, not like all those other snivelling little PC
apologists.
And they're the same ones who say NZ actually watches "reality" TV
shows and Shortland Street.
These people have MUCH to answer for. ;-)

He does, of course.

"Humility is the greatest virtue of all."
Well said. He's his own biggest fan. Since TVNZ has got Holmes it's been
easy for King and other idiots with no talent to suck TVNZ into giving them
shows.
At least only the fools that want to are paying Kings Wages instead of
everyone having to give the mug a benefit through WINZ.

King is pathetic he is most definitely not NZ's answer to Billy Connolly.
The only well known King in NZ that's even close to being funny is the
Minister of Health.
E. Scrooge
HA! I always doubted that Mike King HAD a sense of humour. This
confirms it. Watching him try to squirm out of the bad publicity ("it
was meant as a joke") will certainly be more entertaining than his
show.

I tend to agree. Look a the bFM page ... the audio of King's phone
message, *and* video of a bFM reporter going up to King on the street
and asking him what he thinks of bFM ("Mikey Havoc ... suck my cock..."
etc).
ANNND ... text on the same page inviting you to enter a contest on "who
Mr b wastes at the Big Day Out".
Gee, I dunno ... too subtle for me.

Man its just a pisstake. Mike King is just joining in on the gag.
What I am laughing at the hardest is people saying "oh my god I cant
believe he said that" or "hes gone too far this time" or whatever.
Mike King is showing the sort of good old humor that most of you sadly
seem to lack.
That phone call is a hell of a lot funnier than that stupid elephant
comes in pints joke.
I guess its all a part of which generation your from. The old cheesy
british slapstick "are you being served" / "open all hours" style, or
the more intelligent social commentary "south park" / chris rock style.
I guess some things are just a bit over you old guys heads. Hear a swear
word and you interpret it as anger and get all offended.
I wondered about that - but why would he put his cellphone number out there
for any net-nobody to ring him in the middle of the night? It's not on the
BFM version, but if you try http://www.hiphopnz.com/mikeking1.mp3 you can
hear it quite distinctly.

For intelligent brit comedy of the same era (60's and 70's) check out
Monty Python, Dave Allen, and Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. You'll
like the last two, in some of their stuff they swear more than MK
does. IMO Mike Kings comedy cannot compare with Southpark (itself
largely slapstick).

While you hear a malicious profanity filled outburst and interpret it
as wit. I'll have to try that myself...........

The fact that you and others slag her off so much is an
indication that perhaps she's right.
As they say in Lancashire, "It's better to be looked over than
overlooked".
But I can't say the same for Mike King.

Coach Mitchell no longer considers Thorne to be good Captain material.
There's a surprise for you. Yet more big changes if the fool stays on. His
nonsense last night was good for a laugh. He mentioned the injuries of some
of the better players, yet Mitchell chose to put the best players at risk by
having them in the minor games. The many top players in the country
could've done better against Australia in the semi final - they might not
have beaten them, but they would've played better a lot better without the
need of Mitchell to do it.
E. Scrooge
Morrisey says a lot for what passes for comedians and a sense of
humour in NZ after years of desperate Americanisation - oh, should
that be Americanization? - of popular culture. Without scripts and
gutter language (which can make for great comedy provided they're the
funny-bone not the backbone), and the trappings of his
Letterman-lookalike show, King's about as hilarious as Don Brash. What
an irony that the deadpan 'Eating Media Lunch' and the coverage of
King's reaction to it have been worth more laughs than Mike himself.
But hey, given enough TV time before a compliant audience with no
choices and no brains, eventually he'll be up there with Jennifer
Saunders, Dawn French and Jerry Seinfeld: hugely successful, and sure
to be a great comedian the day he becomes funny.
>Letterman-lookalike show, King's about as hilarious as Don Brash. What
>an irony that the deadpan 'Eating Media Lunch'
Maybe when Mike King spends as much effort trying to be funny as he
does appreciating himself for being funny he might actually become
better at doing it.
