They have shops all over the place.

Does anyone know the origin/derivation of the name?

Marks will be given for originality and accuracy...

It's because they needed something to rhyme with "men" as in "we're New
Zealand's biggest hardware men."

They would not be allowed to get away with such a sexist name today.

A "mitre" is a tall deeply-cleft head-dress worn by bishops and abbots,
especially as a symbol of office. 10 abbots got together and established a
chain of hardware stores.

Also, a mitre is the joint of two pieces of wood or other material at an
angle of 90 degrees, such that the line of junction bisects this angle.
Whatever that means. Where the 10 comes from, I don't know. Perhaps it
sounded cool, or perhaps 10 mitres makes something useful.

Gosh, and here I was thinking it was some kind of dubious Spooneriferous
wordplay... But why 'Mitre' other than a reference to a mitre box? I
doubt any bishops were involved.

No indeed. If it ever came to a court case, I guess it could be a sticking
point but perhaps they'll exchange names and put it behind them.

Agreed...but the jingle is:

" Mitre 10, Mitre 10,
We're the ***** little hardware men. "

Why not ? Richard Clayderman has not been required to change his
family name to Richard Clayderperson.

Either that or they paid $120,000 for an airhead Ad agency to create a

God you all a numpties with your theories1959 Australia. Mitre the coming together is a timber construction joining term.
10 - the number of separate hardware stores/trades people in the group at the time that agreed to form a singular business they named Mitre 10.
