Kiwi Comment: The sun has been shining over most of the country over the
last two to three days, a nice change from the rain. Spring is certainly
springing upon us, with the deciduous trees once again breaking into bud,
however a last minute Winter cold snap is doing its best to fight off our
hopes of an early summer. There are a lot of solemn faces around since the
unbelievable last minute ( in fact after the last minute ) win by Australia
in the rugby. Oh well, it was just a game ( he says trying to cheer himself
up ).
This Week: Racist has bombing plans foiled, Brain-cell research stays in
NZ, Serious assault during robbery, Petrol versus the wallet, plus the
exclusive eBet sports column, and much more from around sunny, friendly,
Aotearoa...

CUSTOMS/POLICE FOIL RACIST'S BOMBING PLANS A joint operation between the
Customs Department and the police has foiled a mans plans for an apparent
bombing campaign on minority groups. 46 year old Stefano Wayne Durante, was
arrested for posssesion of firearms and explosives after his house was
raided. Durante was in possesion of a machinegun, explosives, and other
weapons. He also had in his possesion a map showing Maraes and Jewish
centres around New Zealand.
NZ TO RETAIN BRAIN-CELL RESEARCH PROJECT The company NeuronZ, currently
undertaking World leading research into drugs that may help prevent the
death of brain-cells, will stay based in New Zealand. The project currently
being undertaken at Auckland University, is working on drugs that may
prevent brain damager from diseases such as Alzheimers, as well as head
injuries and cerebral vascular accidents ( strokes ). Funding has been
obtained both locally and from overseas, that will allow the research to
continue in New Zealand instead of being based offshore as once feared.
SERIOUS ASSAULT DURING ARMED ROBBERY A staff member in a Bay of Plenty
tavern was seriously injured during an armed robbery last night (Sunday
06-08). The Te Puna Tavern, about 10kms north of Tauranga, was robbed by a
man armed with a shotgun at around 10.30pm. The two staff members were tied
up, with the male staff member being badly beaten fiirst. The male staff
member is now in Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries, including a broken
leg. It is believed the armed man took a large sum of money from the Tavern
before leaving.
SURPRISE - PETROL PRICE INCREASE BP has today (Monday 07-08) increased the
price of petrol by three cents per litre. This brings the price of premium
unleaded to around $1.19 per litre at most BP stations. BP is blaming an
increase in the cost of refined petrol and the weak NZ dollar for the rise.
Petrol was selling for under 80c per litre only 12 months ago. The other oil
companies are yet to follow BP's lead.

What Else Happened
TODD CLAIMS HE HAS HAD DRUGS TEST The alleged bisexual cocaine using
equestrian rider, Mark Todd, claims he has now undergone a drugs test in
Britain. Todd went under the spotlight a few weeks ago when a British
tabloid claimed they had photos of him having a homosexual encounter, while
snorting cocaine. Todd has never denied the allegations, though he has
signed documents claiming he does not use drugs. NZ sports officials have
not commented on the results of the alleged drug tests.
GOLDIE STOLEN FROM MUSEUM An 18cm by 23cm Goldie painting has been stolen,
in broad daylight, from the Auckland Museum. The painting depicts the wife
of a famous Maori chief, Hori Ngakapa. The painting was finished in 1917,
and is estimated to be valued at around $70,000. So far only the frame has
been found, it was located in a womens toilet at the museum.
GOLDIE RETURNED The goldie oil painting stolen from Auckland Museum last
week, has been recovered. Police say the painting was returned to an
Auckland Police station today by an anonymous businessman. The man said he
paid $10,000 for the painting, but decided as it was a national treasure, it
should be returned. Police say although they are still investigating the
theft, the businessman will not be charged.
RUGBY UNION INVOLVED IN TICKET 'SCALPING' According to a TVNZ report, the
New Zealand Rugby Union is involved in organising ticket scalping. In the
investigation a receptionist for the Union advised an undercover journalist
to phone a nearby law office where a contact could be made to sell them the
already (officially) sold out tickets. The journlist paid $300 for a $60.00
ticket. Officials for the Rugby Union say they are investigating.
CENTRAL OTAGO SKI AND SNOWBOARD SCENE Skiers' and snowboarders' prayers
were finally answered last week, with dumps of fresh powder throughout the
country. This ended a long period of virtually no snowfall, abnormal for
early winter. Queenstown and Wanaka ski resorts received snowfalls of
between 20 and 50 cm, with more expected. This enabled the freeriding scene
to really take off, with the construction of huge tabletop jumps and terrain
parks. Plenty of big air and slopestyle events are planned for this month.
Cardrona had 40 cm of new snow early last week. According to marketing
manager Nigel Kerr, Arcadia Chutes was full of soft, dry, knee-deep good
stuff. Three halfpipes and three tabletop jumps are in operation. The
terrain park will eventually run the whole length of the double chair, Nigel
said. A Big Air contest will be held on August 19th on Cardrona's huge 50
foot tabletop. ( Edited to fit ). Article by KIWINEWS Journalist Alice

Time To Smile
Even the big boys get it wrong sometimes....
** The name Coca-Cola in China was first rendered as Ke-kou-ke-la.
Unfortunately, the Coke company did not discover until after thousands of
signs had been printed that the phrase means "bite the wax tadpole" or
"female horse stuffed with wax" depending on the dialect. Coke then
researched 40,000 Chinese characters and found a close phonetic equivalent,
"ko-kou-ko-le," which can be loosely translated as "happiness in the mouth."
**In Taiwan, the translation of the Pepsi slogan "Come alive with the Pepsi
Generation" came out as "Pepsi will bring your ancestors back from the
dead."
**Also in Chinese, the Kentucky Fried Chicken slogan "finger-lickin' good"
came out as "eat your fingers off."
When Parker Pen marketed a ballpoint pen in Mexico, its ads were supposed to
say "It won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you." However, the company
mistakenly thought the spanish word "embarazar" meant embarrass. Instead the
ads said that "It wont leak in your pocket and make you pregnant."

Rugby
After the first Bledisloe Cup game in Australia, where the All Blacks won
39-35, a high sense of expectation was set for the return match in
Wellington. The fans were not disappointed. However it was the Australians
who came out with all guns blazing with a converted try and a penalty in the
first few minutes. The game was again played at a furious pace and saw
Christian Cullen take the lead back for the All Blacks with one of the best
team moves ever seen in New Zealand.
With the score at 20-18 to the All Blacks the second half became a titanic
struggle with neither team letting up. Possession and territory were all in
favour of the All Blacks for the majority of the half, but deep into injury
time some costly lineouts thrown away caused the Australians to surge down
the field and claim a penalty. Captain and Aussie hero John Eales calmly
strode up and sent over a nail in the All Black coffin that will not be
forgotten for a long time. The final score was 24-23 with 85 minutes of
running time on the clock.
In Line Skating
16-year-old Scott Aldridge in Colombia has just won the 1000 metres inline
skating world championship. The kiwi lead from start to finish and
unconfirmed reports suggest that it is also a new world record.
Basketball
The Nelson Giants with a 113-105 win over Hawkes Bay and the Waikato
Warriors beating the North Harbour Kings have secured themselves home
semi-finals. In the weekends NBL action Auckland beat the Saints
convincingly 120-81 to fill the other semi position while the North Harbour
Kings claimed the other spot. The finals will be held next weekend.
Wood-chopping
Kiwi David Bolstead has taken three world wood-chopping titles in Canada
this weekend to give the title of the world's best wood-chopper.
Golf
Michael Campbell is hotting up going into next weeks US PGA tournament
finishing high up the leader board at the Scandinavian Masters after a five
under 66 in the third round. Kiwi Greg Turner was again down the field after
more mediocre performances.
Next Weeks Action
Mark Todd looks for some pre-Olympic form at the British Open horse trials
early in the week while Golf fans look to the US PGA, which is less than a
week away. The rugby attention now moves to the NPC with divisions one and
two starting next weekend.
Just remember it's easy to watch, but it is fun when you are watching to
win.

Have Your Say
These are my thoughts about my coming to live in New Zealand.
I have been here before but only on business. This time I have come to stay
for ever.
I always said that I would never say "It ain't like home!" but to be
honest I will say that it is not like home in the UK, it is far better. The
People are more friendly, more open and the mixing pot of people and
cultures that makes New Zealand, makes it unique.
On my first day I tried to find my way to Howick and I stopped for
directions, the lady that I asked, enquired if I was on holiday? I informed
her that I had come over to live. She directed me to Howick and then she
said "Enjoy New Zealand!" and she walked away smiling. I guess part of her
magic managed to touch me. She was indeed proud to be Kiwi, proud of her
country, the magic of the "Land of the long white cloud." had begun to work
it's magic on me.
I arrived at my new home and looked at the slightly cloudy blue sky. The
people that I met said to me "Another typical Auckland winter!" and I smiled
because for me this was like a spring day.
All of my tomorrows shall be seasons under the sun! I share with
everyone my hope for the future.
Many people say that "You can choose your friends!" but you are born
into a family. I have chosen my family to be "Kiwi!" and now I meet my
friends.
-Dave Andrews.
***Thanks for that Dave. The one thing I am sure you will love about NZ is
everyone is a friend, some just don't want to believe it :-). ED.***
Dear Trevor
Re: Hine's death
I am very sad to hear about Hine's death, and while I don't have all the
answers, I do have some ideas. I think the problem is extremely complex
and it will take a great deal of effort and strategy to deal with it.
This letter is quite long but hopefully useful. I think there are at
least seven things which could be done to reduce the likelihood of this
sort of thing happening:
1. Reform of the Social Welfare system so that young women do not
regard having babies as being a lucrative career option. I feel that
the DPB should not be significantly higher than the Unemployment Benefit
but perhaps the DSW (or whatever it is called now) should provide
vouchers to be used specially for things like nappies, baby food, baby
clothes etc. This would ensure that the financial assistance goes
where it is needed. I am sure there is room for improvement in this
system.
2. Better sex education in schools at an appropriate age to minimise
the risk of unwanted pregnancies from lack of knowledge or education.
Also more education about the realities of parenthood so that young
people don't assume that it is simply an easy option or a way of leaving
school early.
3. Social support for parents, especially young parents, to help them
manage their children. It is not easy to be a parent, especially when
you are barely past childhood yourself. Even mature, well-educated
parents can find it very difficult. It is probably one of the most
difficult jobs in the World and it is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,
unpaid, often unappreciated, and sometimes without a break. Add to this
the fact that some parents have significant problems such as poverty,
alcohol or drug problems, abusive partners, kids with disabilities such
as hyperactivity, etc, and it is easy to see how parents can crack up.
This service should include practical down-to-earth help and advice for
parents and it could be means-tested so that those who can afford to pay
for the service do pay.
Yours sincerely
Jenny Kelso ( due to the length of Jenny's letter we have unfortunately had
to cut it short - the full letter can be seen on the have your say site
however, at http://www.kiwinews.co.nz/have_your_say.htm )
***Thanks for those excellent ideas Jenny! Social networks are very
important for safe families. Having people to lean on when you need them is
a huge help, having no one means someone always falls over. ED.***
Dear Trevor,
As someone who's worked with mentally ill adults & children for over 40
years, I'd like to refer Dave Andrews (and others) to the web site of the
National Alliance for the Mentally Ill in the United States at:
http://www.nami.org/disorder/whatis.html
I like your reply to Mr. Andrews' letter in that his attitude is actually
another form of stigmatization of the mentally ill.
Unfortunately, Mr. Andrew's attitude, as well intended as it may seem, is
what often prevents those who need treatment from seeking it.
No, Mr. Andrews, epilepsy is not mental illness as it only affects the part
of the brain affecting motor functions. However, clinical depression is a
serious form of mental illness ( "down in the dumps", "blues" type of
depression isn't), and can destroy one's ability to function in life if left
untreated.
To deny the existence of mental illness is to deny treatment, help and
acceptance for those who need it most.

Now For The Famous -
'Food For Thought'
My Wife and I had a wonderful walk on Mount Maunganui beach today. Finally
I can see why so many have fallen in love with the 'Mount'.
It is a truely beautiful area, surf that is both alluring and gentle, yet
also has the power to crash onto the beach, and onto the surfers, with only
a moments notice. The Mount itself towers over the area, and seems to exhert
a power akin to royalty.
The sand itself is amazing, white and pure, covered in shells of all colours
and size..... and then we have the broken beer bottles!
Oh yes, broken jagged glass from beer bottles that fools have taken joy from
throwing on the beach's rocks. Just what a family needs, to have one of
their little ones step on that on a fun outing at the beach!
So damn frustrating! How do you get the message into these teen boys that
breaking beer bottles on the beach is not cool, not the 'in thing', its just
downright idiotic!
How can the thought of some tiny kiddie, or anyone else come to that,
cutting their foot open on the glass from their bottles, give them such a
kick?
About time the breweries came up with another way of contaning their brews.
Either cans only, or they work on a plastic bottle replacement. Lets not arm
these fools with more misery causing ammunition.
We did our bit and picked up some litter that other lazy people had left
lying on the beach. After all, we are Kiwis, just like you, and we have
pride - just like you.
There is so much to enjoy around NZ. Just open your eyes, see what their is
to see. Feel the sand, the soil, the stones and shells. Enjoy with all your
senses, including common sense when it comes to putting litter, and
expecially glass bottles, where they belong.
( I know where I think those teenage boys bottles belong - and it isn't on
the beach, in fact it is somewhere where the sun don't shine at all ).
