Best naked DSL in NZ?

Any other naked DSL users here? What are you paying and what level of
service and support do you receive?

I'm currently with xnet <http://www.xnet.co.nz/internet/ndsl/> and pay
$64.95 per month plus data at $1.28 per GB. Service is ok -
unremarkable, but then that seems the case for all NZ DSL providers I've
used. Support is ok - better than outfits like Orcon and Slingshot in
that Xnet _answer_ their bloody phones in a reasonable time, and I get a
Kiwi I can understand.

Still, I'm not really feeling the love, eh? Prices have remained
stagnant for years and there's been no movement forward towards making
naked DSL less of a Morton's fork
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morton%27s_fork> (sorry - too much time on
my hands today ;-) ) in terms of cost, i.e. you may no longer pay for
phone service with naked DSL, but they bump up the price so you end up
paying the same regardless, or even more once VoIP costs are factored in
(I use Skype in my case, which is very cheap, but even so I only just
end up paying less overall for everything) :-(

TIA,

Yes, as I stated above - "$64.95 per month plus data at $1.28 per GB."
ISPs don't want people to choose naked DSL so they increase the price to
make their bundled plans with phone, etc look as attractive, at least.
Some such as kinect don't even advertise their naked DSL on their site,
but if you phone up you discover you can't even get a naked DSL plan
with a decent data cap/per GB charge. It is bullshit, but they continue
to get away with it year after year, probably because most people don't
even know what naked DSL means, much less that they can get internet
service without phone.

Welcome to the NZ ISP market.

Whether you use the PSTN phone service or VOIP the $40 Telecom line
charge seems to be always factored into the monthly rate. The only way
of avoiding it is to use Telstraclears naked cable.
I'd say find the best bundle price for data and then use VOIP from
2talk. I use TC and 2talk VOIP for my local phone number, its cheap and
the support line from TC has improved a lot.
If you have a smartphone you can use the SIP client on wifi at home.

That's more that i pay for a Telecom landline at present with out
data.. naked DSL was supposed to be a cheaper option but sounds like
not..

I'd love to have an option that bypasses regular phone lines in my area,
but there's nothing yet.

As for VoIP - I'm happy with Skype and SkypeIn and SkypeOut for my phone
service - super cheap, works from any computer, anywhere, with no
hassles. I've heard good things about 2talk and will give it a go if my
needs ever change.

No, what I really need right now is a better naked internet connection,
and the industry just isn't stepping up to the plate.

Well look at snap.net.nz

for $60 you get Naked DDSL and 10 gig
and for and extra
$10 additional 5GB data
$15 additional 10GB data
$25 additional 25GB data
$40 additional 50GB data
$70 additional 100GB data

http://www.snap.net.nz/home/package/naked

Have a look
I use snap for broadband and they have been very good.

I would agree that 2talk works very well as a SIP provider. I use
X-lite as a client and find it works very well.

Some good pricing at the higher end there, but unfortunately not useful
to me. I need a plan that lets me pay for data as I use it, not large
chunks forcing me to plan ahead and suffer or overpay if I get it wrong.
Some months I might only use 50GB. Others 100GB or more. It all depends
on what I'm doing, and plans like Snap's re the reason I went with Xnet
(after deciding on naked DSL of course).

Anyway, Snap do have some good deals there for certain people, so maybe
you've just helped them out :-)

They throttle you to 64kbps once you reach your chosen cap and allow you
a top up option, check the link at the bottom of the page.
That's close to what you want.

Well I'm not against buying large* reasonably priced blocks of data per
se. I object to the waste when they expire at the end of the month. Let
me buy 100GB and have it last even a _couple_ months (but really there's
no reason other than greed to limit it at all) from date of purchase,
and I would be happy with that.

* Though I'm left wondering WTF I have to buy large amounts of something
with no packaging, storage or RL presence at all, in order to get a fair
price...

IIRC, Worldnet has their blocks expire after 12 months. They are just
a little more expensive than those Snap prices.

Yeah, that's not bad :-) I'm tempted to switch based on those details
alone. Can any of their customers tell me what kind of service they get,
please?

I have been with them for some time. The service is excellent, but
you do have to be able to understand Korean accents as the company
seems to be owned and operated by Koreans. Their toll charges to
Korea are way less than for calling around NZ!

Pretty decent, been with them for awhile. I've never had to try their tech
support (which in itself is a pretty good sign), but the service is decent and
well-priced.

Peter.
