Thanks

Did you not get any DVD software with your DVD drive, Trev?
Also a good Video card could well have a DVD player on it's CD as well.
Do you not have anything to play DVDs, or are you looking for something
better than whatever it is you might be using already?
Media Player will play DVDs. You might have to tick DVD in the file types
first, and if you still need a codec then get the trial WinDVD player which
should then let MP play your DVDs.
Checkout the magazines, some of which have very good free Cyberlink Software
as well as other software.

To watch or to Transcode to xvid/ divx?
If to transcode /rip, check out any one of the many at doom9.org:
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/software2.htm
They have full write ups on which one to use and why. Price/ performance
etc.

The new/old pc I bought has a DVD drive in it, with Windows XP pro as the
O/S.
It did not come with software for the drivers, etc.
So... when I try and view DVDs using Windows media player, I just get "You
do not have a DVD decoder installed" ... or some such crap.
lol

Fair enough. Even a trial DVD player should then give you a DVD codec for
so you can watch DVDs with the Media Player.
This looks like a good free player, and you can grab screenshots with it
like WinDVD does (by the look of the camera icon in it). Apart from Windows
Media Player there are very few good free DVD players. The one below looks
like a good one that would be worth trying. Interactual was another player,
but it doesn't look like it's free any longer.
You need to download the DVD codec seperate, which should then work for MP
and the one above.

From halfway down there are a few filters that should do the job.
"Free DVD Filters" is linked to the site with free DVD player, so you
shouldn't have any trouble with those ones.
That lot should help you see DVDs on your PC.

Thanks Scrooge, downloaded both. Yet so far just get a blank black screen
from the Maximus DVD player??
I will keep trying.
:-)

If still no luck. Try some of the other codecs on the lower half of the
website.
And go play with the settings on the player. After installing the codecs
you'll have to restart your PC for them to work most likely.

That's strange. I haven't tried Maximus, but at least since it didn't work
for you, then it's not that strange that it didn't work for Trev either.
Could be something in the settings of the overlay of the video or something.
The thing must work for some people.
You should be able to get Media Player to play them as well.

1 more tool you might well need is DVD Genie. Your DVD software could be
locked into region 1 or whatever. If so DVD Genie could well fix it for
you.
