I've been asked to put an NZ web site on search engine(s), outside of
using them to find stuff I know little about them. It is for a
business (food services) in the central Auckland area.

What are the best options in terms of getting the most hits for the
Auckland area ? Also are paid Internet based business directories worth
the cost, do they have good exposure etc...

To score search engine hits/high rankings relies upon more than just
submitting your site - your pages need to be "optimised" for indexing
through use of meta tags, ALT tags, titles and body text, among others -
think about how people might search for the information you are trying to
provide and include the relevant keywords. IOW, you need to have these sorts
of things in mind when you create the site, not after the fact.
