The Monster is a 3D card only and is one of the best as it uses a 3Dfx
chip set and can be used with Quake II, I don't think the Viper V330
can be used with Quake..
Mind you there are a lot cheaper cards than the Monster 3D that offer
the same performance and use the same chip set..
Cardex Dragon 1000 , R.V. Flash etc...
I payed $225 for my Cardex Dragon 1000...

It uses slow Ram chips not good for overclocking, in fact the Monster
did not come first in the PC PowerPlay reviews, the Orchid did and the
cheaper card cards like the Cardex came second...
The Cardex card uses 35ns ram chips the fastest of the 3Dfx cards...
You still need a Good 2D card and the ET6000 is the fastest there is
for the price for a 128 bit card...

I have a Cardex and have not managed to get it to run over 55 without
crashing. I believe the latest Diamond drivers default to 57.

Does the 2D card make much difference? I have a crappy eagle S3 virge
3d and my fps rates in GLQuake compare to those I have seen posted on
the various benchmarking web sites.
What part does the 2D card play when you are playing for example
GLQuake?

When I first got my pentium board and was having troubles with an old
PCI graphics card, I ended up sticking in an old Trident 8900 in til I
could afford a new S3 PCI card. You might be surprised how fast quake
runs on the old Trident - it was a lot faster than doom even, and
entirely playable. Doom *was* about 5fps. ("Playable" as far as I'm
concerned doesn't necessarily need a frame rate approaching that of
the monitor refresh). I think I know the reasons why but I won't bore
people with their details.
Having seen a 3dfx card in action though, I want one... :)

Anybody have or seen a Viper V330? anyone recommend a good TV-out
card?
I thought the Pure 3D had TV out, mind you is it PAL...??
The BILL..
The Pure 3D does both PAL and NTSC but the PAL is limited only to
games in 3DFX mode whereas you can use the NTSC output for your
Windows 95 work (as long as the screen mode is 640x480 from memory-
must check the manual).
To ask the age old question... what's a good price? anyone got one 2nd
hand:)
Also what about voodoo2? dramatic difference? dramatic improvement?
Supposed to be released 1st quarter '98.
yup, pitty nobody sells them locally in nz...

i dont know how much a pure3d would cost you if you chose to ship one from
the states... at least $300+
i bought my monster3d a few months ago for $269+gst. most people would not
notice the difference between the monster3d and the pure3d in normal game
play. i've run my monster3d along side a pure3d (which happened to be on a
faster system) and could not notice a great amount (if any) of increase in
frames per second. apparently the pure3d is great for large rooms/maps or
when you have a lot of players/monsters on your screen.
it's fact though that the pure3d has 2 extra mega bytes of texture memory
(total of 6mb) over the monster3d (total of 4mb) and that the ram is faster
in the pure3d (not sure of the exact figures).

test versions of the voodoo2 sound amazing. one of the developers at ID
Software (makers of doom1&2/quake1&2) tested a pre-release voodoo2 along
side other 3D cards in the market using the recently released Quake2.
results were astounding. here are a few results of some interest. (more
results on this page

3Dfx Reference 3Dfx Voodoo2 SLI 4/4/4 640x480 67.5fps
Canopus Pure3D 3Dfx Voodoo 6MB 640x480 27.0
Diamond Monster3D 3Dfx Voodoo 4MB 640x480 26.7
looks good so far!
i wouldnt expect the voodoo2 to be as cheap as the current voodoo1 boards
are today. i'd say at least $500+ when released and falling slowly over the
following months.

I bought mind starigh from Canopus for US$179 but the postage via
fedex was US$49! A couple of days before it shipped the NZD fell
against the USD making the purchase even more expensive. The card
ended up costing $396 delivered - similar to what it sells here I
think.
