My brother has been having a problem where his computer sometimes completely
locks up while using Woosh. Doesn't happen while using our dial up account
or while doing anything else on the computer. I thought it was just
something to do with his computer, but when I was using Woosh on my laptop
last night exactly the same thing happened. We're both running Win XP. The
desktop is a P4 2.6Ghz and the laptop is a P4-M 3Ghz. I have a GeForce FX
5650, no idea what the desktop has.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Is it more likely to be the dialup software, the modem hardware or Windows
XP that is causing it?

USB is one hell of a resource hog... it may just be making your whole
system lag.

It's a complete freeze... mouse cursor is stuck, computer won't respond to
ctrl-alt-del.

Do you mean in the Woosh modem or in *both* the desktop and the laptop?

Had a look at your site, BTW. Very nice.

Not that I can find. Log entries seem to stop at 5:03pm and resume again at
11:26pm. Lock up happened around 9pm. Last event log before 11:26 is
"event log service stopped" -- not by me it wasn't. First event log at
11:26pm is "event log service started".

The modem/cable but yeah, no idea really, havent played with woosh, and
I dont think many(if any) here have... it doesnt seem particuly common.

Possibly when it locks, huit A-C-D, and leave it for a while.
I saw a lock up with a machine a while back where it seemed to be hard
locked, I hit Alt-Shift-Esc and left it for like an hour, and eventually
Taskmanager came up... it must have been using all 3GHz up and then some.

Thanks... it's gonna have some changes soon to reflect a project I'm
getting into, but yeah, top secret... so ssshhhhhh. :)

Using a Centrino 1.6 laptop and woosh modem via ethernet I haven't seen this
problem. Maybe you should buy the ethernet cable and forget the USB.

My uninformed guess would be the Whoosh USB drivers don't like something
on your machines. Next guess would be a problem with the Whoosh hardware,
but having never seen or used it I'm only guessing.

Cheers

I have a feeling that it is something to do with Win XP, as previous to
running it on these machines I was running in on a machine with Win 98SE and
never had any difficulties, aside from the usual ones that come with running
a M$ OS. Thanks for your input :)

I used to use a USB ADSL Modem, the drivers kept crashing my PC. I
changed to a router and connected it to the RJ-45 LAN connection, no
driver issues. Now I still use the router (18 months later) and I still
have no issues, colour me happy.

I do have plenty of other USB devices* that give me no trouble at all, so
it is not the USB itself, just the drivers for that one device.

* My USB list:
Keyboard
Mouse
USB2 card reader
USB2 3.5" HDD enclosure with whatever drive.
HP iPaq cradle
Bluetooth dongle
USB2 2.5" HDD enclosure with 40GB
USB2 512MB Pendrive
X’s Drive Pro with 30GB HDD
X’s Drive II - currently not going, HDD is now in the Pro.
Microtek Scanmaker X6
KVM with 4 port USB Hub

I have so little problems with USB, I don’t know why the Dynalink USB
ADSL Modem gave me such grief. Problem occurred on a PC running WinXP
Pro and another PC running Win2K Server.

My advice:
Definately try changing to LAN connection instead of USB.

Do you have service pack1? It has fixes for USB2.
