Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to find a flash-based script for adding a flip-book to a
website, based on a PDF document. Basically something visually appealing
for viewing a PDF within the website (as opposed to using the browser
plugin). They want a little bit of eye candy - maybe a nice page-turning
effect, that sort of thing.

Can anyone recommend a particular solution? I have done my own research,
but most seem to be either hosted, or seriously lacking in the usability
department. We don't mind paying for a script, but don't really want to
be paying ongoing monthly fees for a hosted solution as we only have a
single PDF that we want to convert. A web-based service where we upload
a PDF, set some options, maybe pay some money, and let it convert the
document to a SWF for embedding into our site would be perfect.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Harvey.

Hi Harvey,
We use issuu.com - actually my boss uploads them all and just supplies me the html to embed, so I'm not sure what config options there are, but I know they can be made public/private and it is inexpensive.
Alternatively, we have created our own flash file to make a flip book from images/screenshots/any content. Obviously a bit more work to make the thing up, but is an option.
Please can you let us/me know what you go with so I can evaluate it against what we currently do.
Cheers

Yeah, issuu.com is a sure way to piss off your visitors.

InDD can save files as flash. They come as a single flash file with a slightly folded corner page. You can drag that to turn the page.
Don't know if it's native InDD feature or a plugin of sorts.

Hi Dave,

We ended up choosing http://www.codebox.es/pdf-to-flash-page-flip to
make the flip book, which to me seems like a reasonable way to go. The
UI for the flip-book isn't frustrating or complicated, and it's not a
hosted service. It creates a series of swf files (one per page) and the
associated XML file / HTML file for binding it all together.
Unfortunately it only allows 10Mb PDFs which could potentially be an issue.

Harvey.
