1. Discuss how the four steps involved in study affect or relate to
your personal approach to study.

2. What do you think of the statement on page 71, “what should you
study? That depends on what you need.”

3. Share a testimony of a spiritual insight the Holy Spirit impart to
you while studying the word of God.

I look forward to reading your post!

The four steps to study have tremendously impacted my personal
approach to study.  We all know each individual’s learning style is
different , one person may hear the lesson once and get it while The
another may have to both listen and watch. For me, what works best is
to write the same thing over and over (repetition) until it becomes
ingrained in my memory. I then focus on it for as long as it takes for
me to get it, not changing to a new subject or topic, until I’ve fully
grasped it’s true meaning. At my age with all the responsibilities and
distractions, it’s not easy to focus while studying, so I have to make
extra effort to get the job of studying done. I also have to pray for
enlightenment so I can see things from various perspectives instead of
being limited.  Even though I have read the material before, I still
need the guidance of the Holy Spirit who, as the Teacher, will guide
me into all truth, breaking down the insurmountable barriers that had
previously caused me not to see things as clearly.
Of a truth, what we study should be dependent  on our needs. Most of
us study because the particular text is in relation to our jobs,
therefore to be more marketable and  more effective at what we do, we
have to do some self adjustment by getting additional tools to assist
us. Also, there’s the other side of us that studies just to broaden
our knowledge base so we will be able to interact  with many more
people on subjects covering a broader spectrum. This is also helpful
for our self image as we will not feel inferior to others because we
can relate to the various topics broached. As Christians, we need to
be able to reach different people at their intellectual levels.
Whatever we do, as long as the Holy Spirit is involved we can do
anything ( Phill. 4 :13 ). Being a Sunday School teacher, this course
is helping me in my personal spiritual growth so I can more clearly
see and attempt to meet the needs of my young students. Each person
( as I earlier mentioned ) has his/her own learning styles so my job
is to understand what those styles are and adjust my method so all can
learn. The apostle Paul states that we should “study to show ourselves
approved unto God”. When we have ‘holy knowledge’, we will use
information garnered for the right reasons not just to broaden our
horizons mentally and intellectually.
I am not sure whether my testimony qualifies as an inspiration, a
revelation or both but here goes. I was at work one day fasting and
reading the Word of God, when I got the ‘feeling’ that we should pray
for the youths in the church. I sat there crying all the time trying
to ignore the message, I finally relented  and sent a text  to each
adult in the church whose name was in my phonebook. I asked everyone
to pray for our youths and shortly thereafter received a call from one
of the adults asking if everything was fine and what had  happened. I
replied that all was well but little did I know that one of our youths
was in a grave situation at the time and many of the adults I had
texted already knew, hence the phone call. I was the last to know of
the matter but, I’ve come to the realization that the more I lean on
Jesus and obey His Words, the stronger I get. I don’t have to wonder
who touch me because I know it is the Hands of the Lord.

As a Child of God one of the channels through which God speak to me is
through his words. It is therefore my priority and responsibility to
study His words. Studying the word of God is not merely reading it,
but it is paying close attention to what is being read. I must then
enter into reading His words with an open mind, ready to learn, not as
a teacher but as a student. I normally approach the studying of a
passage thinking of the what, when, where and how and carefully
observing the relevance of the material. At times in order for me to
grasp or understand what God is really saying to me, I read the
passage or verse several times? As stated by the text “sheer
repetition without even understanding what is being repeated does
affect the inner mind.” Before I begin my study I would pray for God
to increase my understanding and allow his Holy Spirit to bring
clarity to His words. After understanding what is been read, I will
begin to evaluate my life according to the word of God. It is then
that I begin to see myself through the eyes of God and see things
from Gods perspective starting to apply what i’ve studied to my life
to live a more Godly life.

As a teenager growing up, my dream was always to be an accountant.
With that in mind, during my last two years in high school give the
opportunity to a specific or specialized area of study I choose
Business. This allows me to focus on the subjects I needed to pursue
my career in accounting. As a child of God, a leader, a worker in the
vineyard and a soldier my area of study should be what I need to
prepare or equip me for such task. My goal is to know him, to know
His will to be like Him. Therefore I need to study His manual, his
guidelines, His basis instruction before leaving Earth, as Paul in 2nd
Timothy 2: 15 states “Study to show yourself approved to God, a
workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth. What I study is what I think, what I think is what I live and
what I live is what am. If I study the word I will live the think the
word, live it and be the word. David said “Thy word is a lamp unto my
feet and a light unto my path.” It is the word that God uses to
direct and instructs me on what to do and how to live. As a leader I
cannot and should not do anything without being guided and instructed
by God. Therefore studying the word of God is of high importance to
my daily living.

One Sunday morning Late November, at about 5:30 one Sunday morning I
dreamed I was travelling up a hill and I saw a pastor who has been my
prayer partner at the bottom of the hill. He asked me if I got a word
from God and I told him no. He replied I got a word for you.” He told
me to read Psalm 34 and psalm 137 and as I continued up the hill he
followed me. .
Before going to bed that Saturday night I was talking to my friend and
I told her I was battling with a decision I had to make pertaining to
my ministry in my local church. I knew deep in my heart the direction
God wanted me to take but was not willing to suffer persecution and
all the suffering that comes with it. My phone rang that morning and
it was my friend on the other line she did not say a word but started
praying, when she was done praying she hanged up. I got out of bed,
took my bible and carefully studied the two passages. The word of God
began to minister to me, I could hear His still voice reminding me the
commitment I made and that his angel encamps around all those who
feared Him and delivers them. He further told me in Psalm 137 that
even though I consider myself to be in a strange land (difficult
times) I should not hang my harp up but should continue to praise
Him. The entire psalm ministered to me. When I went to church that
same day it was confirmed by the guest speaker who prayed for me and
told me the Lord said He heard my prayers and that He has my back. I
truly felt God speaking to me through His words and will continue to
study his words and serve him until He comes to say, “Well done good
and faithful servant, thou have been faithful over few things, I will
make you ruler over many things…..” to God be the Glory. God bless you
all.

1. The four steps involved in study relate to my personal approach to
study in a positive way.
I try to live up to these four steps since I am now aware of them, I
cultivate the concept in a
clear, concise manner. I now study to show myself approved unto God,
rightly dividing the word of thruth!
Analyzing and using suggestive association, which is the connecting of
a thought that is remote or abstract
with the familiar...and with all I have learned from NYYLA has changed
my life with hope for the task ahead in Ministry.

2. I think of the statement "what should you study? That depends on
what you need." is a powerful and infomative one,
I am now thinking about studying in a fresh and new perspective, this
statement permeate my subconscious thoughts,
and saturates my love for God and my need for studying more spiritual
things.

3. The Holy Spirit impart this spiritual insight through life in God's
word when I am studying the "Church of God Declaration of Faith."
Wow! I was to speak at our watch-night 2011/2012 service and I was
directed with joy to find all the 14 scripture verses for
the 14 Declarations. I was so enlightened, uplifted, delivered, my
life was changed again, the scales fell off my eyes, I was up until
4am....and I
did share the word with boldness, to God be all the glory!...even at
"WinterFest 2012" this past weekend a brother mentioned how powerful
the word
was, and others ask how did I find all the scriptures. The word of God
gives the spiritual insight that can let us have a fresh, potent
reality to
us the God chasers. The disciples received the live version of the
word, but we have the better part in my opinion...the Holy Spirit...He
rock!

1. The author states repetition, concentration, comprehension and
reflection are the four steps involved in studying. I can truly say
that many of us, I being one, have either skipped some steps through
laziness or just pure ignorance. Now that I know, I can reflect back
on my habits of study and see if I employed those four steps.

a) Repetition- Even within taking this class, I'm altering my method
of reading the assignment and responding. I take notes, as I'm
reading, then I review the notes referring back to the book. I
purposefully do not respond to the questions the same day after
reading because if I do it on another day, it forces me to review my
notes and the book before responding which fosters more repetition of
seeing and reading the same material.
b) Concentration- Is there such a thing as Christian ADD? Because
sometimes I think I have it :) My attention span is somewhat limited,
my mind will wander off of what needs to be done, what should have
been done, the mental list. And without concentration, I find myself
successfully reading a passage but not having a clue of what I just
read because my mind was not concentrated. Well, thank God for His
Holy Spirit because He gave me some practical strategies of combating
distractions. Sometimes, its as simple as moving the location of where
I study or just being honest with Him.
c) Comprehension- I once asked God after observing things I continue
to do and saw others doing, "Why do we do things even after we know
they are wrong?" Well, besides our fallen sinful nature, God brought
me to the same Scripture as the author in John 8:32, it's when you
know the truth that you are set free. And you can't know something if
you only visit it once or whenever times get tough. You really know
something when you spend time with it and that is what you set you
free.
d) Reflection- (My favorite part of studying) Is reflecting on the
significance of what we are studying. What is the significance to you
in this day and age or even in this season in your life.

2. "What you study depends on what you needs" words of a true teacher.
We are all at different seasons, stages and processes of our lives. So
it's true. What do you need right now? Is it faith, is it trust, is it
forgiveness, is it love, do you need to increase your prayer life? Do
you need provision? Study what you need.

3. A spiritual insight the Holy Spirit imparted to me, is the ability
to learn from God. If you had a Christian upbringing, sometimes it
seems like once you invite Christ into your life, that you
automatically know how to pray, how to study, how to worship, how to
fellowship, how to be a Christian. When that is the furthest from the
truth and why people fail. There is a process of being discipled to
become a disciple. The disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to
pray, Jesus is called the Great Teacher (Rabbi), so I found out it's
okay to say "I'm learning". In Celebration of Discipline, the author
writes, "It soon becomes obvious that study demands humility" (p. 66).
I have to put down all that I thought I knew or felt like I had a
pretty good grip on and be willing to learn and be taught again by Him
over and over again.

1. I believe that these are steps that we might have heard about at
any point in our life. However it’s easier to use what we feel
comfortable with, and of course hide these concepts somewhere in our
minds. Being completely honest, these four steps somewhat affect my
personal approach to study. I love to study , I love to learn new
things but honestly after reading I this week’s reading I noticed that
I have the tendency to skip many steps that might help me to get a
better understanding of what I ‘m learning. For example the intrinsic
rules that involves three readings! Wow, I am used to the “jump into
conclusions” rule right away; I even skip some pages on the book to
know what to expect later on the reading. Love that the author made
emphasis on what the Bible says that “there is a time for everything”.
Taking one step at a time and taking the time to truly grasp what we
are learning is something that I really need to work on.
2. I agree with this statement. I believe that we are all in different
stages and have different backgrounds and what not, as a response to
this we definitely have different needs. I think that the best method
to find out what to study is to pray to God to show us those areas in
our life where we need to grow, those areas where we need to acquire
the knowledge that would set us free.
3. Before moving to NY, we lived in VA. In our Church in VA sometimes
I used to lead the devotionals. One morning I was studying the word of
God and getting ready for the devotional that next Sunday and I just
felt that I needed to write, it was around 6:00 AM. I took a piece of
paper and started writing the message the Holy Spirit was giving me,
not sure of what I was going to do with it. I put the piece of paper
in my purse. That Sunday during the devotional once again I felt that
I needed to read the paper and I did, our Pastor started crying and
after the devotional talked to the congregation about something that
was going on and most of us did not know and that message was the
confirmation from God of what the congregation was going to do, Praise
God!

Lol,
Love your post. Your testimony (question 3) is very inspirational.
Sometimes we just have to obey those “feelings” that we know are just
put in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. When we start questioning those
“feelings” we simply start disobeying God. Love that you mentioned
that you don’t have to wonder who touched you because you know it is
the Hands of the Lord; I honestly think that if we all just stop
wondering and questioning and just move in obedience we would surely
see bigger things than what we are already seeing. God bless you
sister.

1. I recognized from turning then pages of this book that I had to
approach it as a student - not merely as one seeking information for a
good grade but to become subject to the content therein.  I believe
when I made the decision to sit under the teachings of this book
before sending my posts, it was under the fully direction of the Lord.
I have been on a quest to learn how to really study the word and to
know it, Mr. Foster really drove home the  principles for a great
study.    I am going revolutionize the way I was studying by paying
close attention to these principles in this book.  Further, these four
steps will become the principal way in which I approach my studies
whether it's the bible or another book.

2. What should you study? That depends on what you need.” This is a
true statement in that true study involves more than just reading a
book.  We have our journey to take and my need may not be your needs.
Study becomes more interesting when the things we are learning
applies directly to our situations.  While there is some clear cut
direction in how we study, it is necessary to leave what to study to
the dire ct need of the student.
Of course, we know that the author is talking about

3. A spiritual insight the Holy Spirit impart to you while studying
the word of God how much God is willing to grant us the desire of our
heart in reading how much Paul wanted to preach the Gospel in Rome.

I find that these four steps listed I only do best at some of them.
For example I can concentrate if I shut everything else out of my
space at that very moment. My ability to comprehend is very good I
grasp things pretty easily and I analyze everything so comprehension
comes easy for me.Since I love to reflect on things anyway that is
never a issue I face however I kinda despise repition so that step
does not work too well for me

2)I think this statement is true because we all are seeking for
something different in terms of our personal needs . I may need to
study something that helps me to fast effectively.while someone else
might need encouraging.

3)My self esteem was very shot and I was afraid of stepping out for
God and while studing he showed me that I am of much value and worth.
He also increased boldness in me and allowed me to minister to others
who find them selves in situation like mine .In that study he also
thought me about dwelling in the secret place and I found out that the
secret place of God is my place of total surrender.

Humility is really the key to study. We should be "determined to hear
what the author is saying and not what we want him to say." If we go
to the table with an open mind instead of with preconceived ideas, then
we will learn more, both for ourselves and for others. The Word of God
never change neither does He lie so we cannot 'get' the Word to say
what we want.We did not get our spirit from the world but from Him who
will also give us clarity. God bless you all.

1. These four steps of study have definitely identified opportunities
for improvement for me that’s for sure. Repetition, Concentration,
Comprehension, Reflection, knowing they are all essential finding a
happy balance with all the steps would serve to be beneficial for me.
Repetition, I was always the index card queen but its true you don’t
retain; as the text states sheer repetition without understanding
doesn’t affect the inner mind, I have recently taken an exercise
course where Positive affirmations are recited while exercising and
its extremely effective. Concentration, this is a challenge I am
willing to conquer. It’s difficult to really zone out or shall I say
zone in and concentrate but there were some helpful hints in the
reading for instance leaving the apartment escaping from the familiar
to engulf myself in study. Comprehension, made it clearer for me that
I cannot go into study searching for the “eureka” moment I need to
gain understanding first then those aha moments will follow once
understanding is achieved. Reflection, defining the significance of
what is being studied I think you definitely have to have completed
all the steps to really get to this point all steps need to have some
balance, which will be something I will be committed to working on.

2.“what should you study? That depends on what you need” –
How profound is this statement. It forces you to instantly go into
self-reflection mode. What do I need ? What do I really need? This
statement definitely causes you to look deeper within yourself . This
statement has encouraged me to take small parts of the Bible and break
them down as discussed in the book and customize my study so it
directly adheres to my needs.

3. The Holy Spirit has whispered to me to listen and let go and just
walk by Faith. I am very shy but I love to work behind the scene
decorating and all. So when the Holy Spirit said do a praise dance….
I sort of answered back I don’t dance, I am way to shy for anything
like that. Has anyone else ever felt that, like oh no you must mean
someone else…. . Sure enough I was researching the uniforms and songs
to do, still not understanding why. Soon Predestined 2 Praise was born
the young ladies of the church would dance and I would oversee them,
still not knowing anything about dancing. I did go to Performing Arts
but as a Visual Arts major drawing, painting, events, anything
creative that’s my element. Our first rehearsal, the girls were so
into it and so great at it they learned the song in a few hours, and I
just stood back and wept saying look at God, with God I can do
anything….

1.The four steps involved in study are: repetition, concentration,
comprehension and reflection. I utilize all four steps when I
personally study the Bible. I believe each is equally important and
helps solidify what you are reading/studying. If I didn’t use each of
these steps, then my studying will be in vain.
2. As Christians, we all experience various circumstances and
situations. There are times when we go through rough patches that we
dwell or study stories that apply to that particular situation.
Reading relational material helps us remember that we have the
victory! On the other hand, studying random passages or scriptures are
great in that they remind us of who God is and what He still can do.
3. Currently I am studying the story of Elijah and Elisha. During this
study I was taken back by Elijah’s boldness. He KNEW who God was and
wasn’t afraid of taking his message to people in the “highest
courts”(King Ahab, Jezebel, the prophets of Baal). While reflecting on
this story, it donned upon me, where has that fearlessness gone among
us Christians? Many of us are afraid of “being offensive” rather than
spreading the one and only true gospel. These passages have deeply
ministered to me reminding me of the God’s power when we exercise
faith, God gives us supernatural wisdom and power.

I have really gain more insight into the four steps involved in study
which are: Repetition, Concentration, Comprehension and Reflection. I
have never thought that mere repetition without understanding of what
is being repeated does affect the mind and ingrained habits of thought
can be formed by repetition. This something that I am going to
practice more for a positive change in my spiritual life.
Concentration is something that I need to work on, at times when I am
reading I would get distracted and end up think of other thing that I
need to do. With Comprehension, I am in agreement with the author I
would read something over and over for a better understanding. I
usually reflect on anything that I read to see how I can apply it to
my life and also to share what I have learned with someone else.
I do think what you study should depend on what you need because of
the abundance of materials that can be studied and the lack of time we
have, we do need to prioritize, and I feel that the need does not have
to be personal it could be a need to know so that we can help someone
else.
often times I would read a passage of the scripture and I would have
some unanswered questions then I would pray that God would show me the
truth that is hidden in that passage, He would revealed it to me by
having me comparing it to something in the natural or hearing someone
else speak directly on the subject. God is a magnificent God, He will
never leave his children in darkness for He is light.

Kourtney,

can accomplish anything.
God bless you.
