As teachers of God’s Word, we should not only master the Word but
be mastered by it. Paul told Timothy that students should exceed us in
wisdom that we will leave behind faithful men who will teach others.
‘Win the lost at any cost’ should be action instead of mere words. How
is this possible in a teaching environment? By allowing students to
demonstrate his/her preferred way of learning. Good teaching is open
to change; the ‘normal’ way of teaching has always reached most but
not all students, allowing some to fall through the cracks. Those who
learned through regular teaching styles were labeled as ‘bright’,
while those who could not apply themselves through the same methods
were known as ‘dumb’. When teachers change the status quo (lecture,
lecture, lecture) and do whatever it takes to meet students on an
individual level, the students will in turn, develop the right
attitude and confidence to persist in the learning process.
Each person is as unique as a fingerprint, so the one-size-fits-
all approach is totally out of the question. By inviting each student
to share his/her thoughts and reflection, the teacher can recognize
measures to be taken and the appropriate tasks for his/her level of
understanding. Each person processes things differently so the teacher
will be able to identify talent and determine through the students’
particular style, how to effectively reach them through techniques
suited to them. Tasks should be structured so they are manageable, to
ensure instructions are clearly understood. Feedback is an effective
tool to motivate students; as their styles guide the way they learn,
the best method (s) should be applied so they can better recall
information.
Compassion and humility are assets that all teachers should
possess. Much care and attention should be given so as to support
their efforts so they’ll be able to organize information garnered and
transform it into meaningful knowledge. Our role as teachers is to
provide opportunities for students to use their strengths and skills
so they will enjoy learning. Learning in the secular is a different
ball game than learning things spiritual, therefore teachers of God’s
Word should “study to show ourselves approved unto God” so we’ll be
given the wisdom to “rightly handle the word of the truth.” Things of
God are spiritually discerned so we should be as Ezra who “set his
heart to study the Law of the Lord, practice it and teach” it to those
we are entrusted to teach. God bless you all.
