PHASE 1 WEEK 5 THE DISCIPLINE OF PRAYER (RICHARD FOSTERS—PAGES 33-46)
Discuss the statement:
1. To pray is to change. Prayer is the central avenue God uses to
transform us. If we are unwilling to change, we will abandon prayer
as a noticeable characteristic of our lives. The more we pray, the
more we come to the heartbeat of God.

2. Prayer starts the communication process between us and God. All
the options of life fall before us. At that point we will either
forsake our prayer life and cease to grow, or we will pursue our
prayer life and let Him change us.

3. Either option is painful. To not grow in His likeness is to not
enjoy his fullness. When this happens, a haunting voice continues to
ask, ‘What could I have become in him if I would have been a person of
prayer?’ To grow in His likeness is to enjoy His fullness. When this
happens, the priorities of the world begin to fade away.”

I look forward to reading your post

i like the statement of Archbishop Tait, " i want a life of greater, deeper, truer prayer"
1) prayer does change everything and it also gives peace, the more we pray, the more closer we are to God'
more prayer, more power" litle prayer, little power" no prayer" no power.

1.Yes, yes, to pray is to change: our minds, our lifestyle, our plans
for the future,and
our desire to see a change in the lives of others. God can only
transform us through prayer "....
if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us..." only
if we pray He will be able to transform.
If we are unwilling to change our "cummbered loads of care lifestyle,
we are delaying the '....expected end '
God promised us. Sometimes it is not only sin that can prevents us
from coming to the heartbeat of God, but just
being in fear, (which is of satan), being stingy with our money, and
being too busy to do the things of God.

2.Prayer is the communication process between us and our God, "....but
in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let
your requests be made known unto God..." Phil.4:6
Forsaking our prayer life not only stop our growth, but the consistent
victory over known besetting sin. However, if we
persue a persistent prayer life and let Him change us we will
"....rejoice in hope, patient in tribulation,..." Rom. 12:12
Prayer brings us to a state of grace and favor.

3.I Love the last stanza "....To grow in His likeness is to enjoy His
fullness, when this happens, the
priorities of the world begin to fade away."
We are so familiar with the piorities of the world...wow! we live here
and wrestle with strong holds everyday, thanks be to our God
who has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every
way, always to have everything you need, you may excel in
every good work. We MUST pray with thanksgiving so we can have
answered prayers, I have a list with my needs written on it, and the
last time
I look at my list I can "check" off most of them as answered prayers,
(to God be all glory) the salvation of others is my priority but, it
is up
to the unchurched to accept the gift of God, we can only live as
light, and show love to them as we witness to them daily.

1. In every relationship, communication is key,and prayer is our means
of communicating with our Heavenly Father. When we forsake our prayer
lives, it means we are not willing to change, and naturally the
relationship will become dormant. Instead of drawing closer to God
there is a rift which will not be mended until we get back that
intense desire to change. At this time, we will not know how to shun
the appearance of evil, much more the evil itself.
On the obverse, the more we pray the closer we get, the better we
know Him, the more we trust Him. In other words, prayer solidifies our
relationship with God, so we can go to Him with and about everything.
When we draw closer to Him, our conscience is quickened by His
holiness; our imagination is purged by His beauty, and our will is
devoted to His purpose. Our sense of sin is deeper, our faith is
stronger and our hope brighter.

2. All the options of life are truly before us and we serve a God who
gives us freedom of choice. We need to be careful however, that we do
not get too heady with this freedom and become enticed by our lusts.
We have to stay on task even when seemingly urgent distractions clamor
for our attention. Diversions may be on every side, but we cannot
allow the 'urgent' to overwhelm the important. These are the times
when we need to 'force' ourselves to reach Him through prayer. Yes I
said force. It may sound un-christianlike but be honest,to purpose in
our hearts and to bring it to fruition takes force or determination if
you prefer. We cannot be fickle in our relationship with God because
our 'luck' may just run out' We need to remain focussed and remember
that we're not in this by ourselves. When we are hardpressed on every
side that's when we should be unmoveable, unshakeable and send Him our
'knee-mails.' When trouble comes our way we sometimes cry, but crying
is not always a sign of weakness. It's just a realization that we
cannot fight our battles alone. Hand over the reigns and let Him be
the pilot. Capitulate to the Holy Spirit and grow in His grace.

3. To not grow in his likeness is to either live as a straight up
sinner or to be living a 'sham christianity.' This is the kind that
looks good om the outside but does not compute on the inside. 'White-
washed sepulchre syndrome' causes us to miss out on the fullness of
God, which is quite daunting to imagine. We are told beforehand, the
pay we will get for the work that we do so no surprise there.
occasionally see some dishevelled persons on the street 'preaching.'
They are decked out with attache cases and all, but are obviously in
the throes of insanity. I can't help but wonder if somewhere in their
consciousness, they're asking the burning question "What would I have
become in Him if I would have been a person of prayer?" This also
causes me to pause and reflect on my life. If I stop praying that
could be me, without power and without A SOUND MIND.
To grow in His likeness, we have to let holiness and righteousness
be the hallmark of our lives. Christ said He would rather us all to be
like Him and we know He was consumed with Holy Passion, a zeal for the
things of His Father. We should endeavor to have that passion so we
can more clearly see Who God is and What He does. As we're made in His
image, we need to fully understand Him whose image we bear. What we
have heard about Him is just a reflection (which of course is very
dim.) Unless we know Him for ourselves, we will not know the Source of
that reflection. When we start 'dining' with Him, instead of inviting
Him for a cup of tea and a little conversation, our priorities will
change. We'll begin to live as if our lives are on loan and our
possessions (also on loan) are to be held lightly, not tightly. We can
genuinely enjoy 'stuff' without destroying our souls, being now
attached to God and detached from the world.

It is truly a blessing to be a participant of this forum.
1. God wants us to work for His glory, but his priority is for us to
enjoy Him. Prayer is the most essential form of communication with
God. It is in fact the central avenue God uses to transform us. It is
through prayer that we are drawn into a deeper relationship with Him
and also in a closer relationship with others, allowing God to do His
work in us and through us. Real prayer as the text state is “life
creating and life changing. The closer we get to God, the more we
know Him, the more we know his will for our lives and the more we
desire to be like Him. We will begin to think God thoughts, desire
the things he loves, will the thing He wills, and see things from His
point of view. As leaders we ought to be like God so let us as the
text states, view prayer as the main business of life because “to pray
is to change”.

2. Prayer starts the communication process between us and God. As
workers of the Lord, we can only know what He requires of us when we
communicate with Him. For us to be mature leaders we must pray and
not only pray, but make it a way of life. We can either choose to do
as Proverbs 3 states “Trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean
not to thy own understanding in all thy ways acknowledge him and He
shall direct thy path”, through prayer or do not pray and fail. We
should pray with an expectation that change should and would occur.
We should never wait until we are perfect and everything is straight
to start praying, because “when we pray God slowly and graciously
reveals to us our evasive actions and sets us free from them”. As
leaders, we are working with God to determine the future or the
outcome of events in the lives of many. The more we pray the more we
become involved in what God does. Therefore let us pursue our prayer
life and let God change us as we work towards changing the world.

3. One writer states,“When God does the challenging, not growing is
not an option”. God expects us to accept the challenge and PUSH (pray
until something happens), Paul in Romans, “What shall we do then shall
we continue in sin that grace may abound, God forbid”. To grow in
Gods likeness is to be like God. We will not see things as the world
does but will see the world as God sees it. The things of the Lord
will become our priorities. We will be proactive in winning and
nurturing souls for the kingdom. Matthew 28: 19 will become our way
of life. Whether we chose to pray or not, we are going to go somewhere
so how much better it is to have a direction that has been set by
communion with the divine Creator than to be walking without
direction? I will say like Archbishop Tait. “: I want a life of
greater, deeper, truer prayer.

A well quoted song goes thus "The glory of Jesus shines brighter &
brighter, The closer I get the more I see,the glory of our soon coming
king." This sums it up pretty well, but, I can only imagine Isaiah
looking at His glory and splendor. No wonder he cried out that he was
mess. When we pray without ceasing and put God first, last & always
then, we'll understand what Isaiah, John and Moses saw.

To pray is to acknowledge our creator God who is all-knowing, Supreme
and forever present, who desires to commune with us whom He has
created in His own image to show His love and His goodness and to
transform us into His Likeness.
Prayer is our offensive and defensive weapon that our Heavenly Father
has allowed us to use to change any given situation according to his
will and to overcome the evil one. In order for us to mature and be
like our Heavenly Father we definitely have to change through prayer
for His ways are not like ours, therefore we need to grow in Him by
Him.
Change is not an easy thing to do, but if we desire the best of this
world(Jesus Christ) and the world to come change is indispensable. we
have to forsake our evil ways an be transformed by the renewing of our
minds and accept His ways for our lives to enjoy His abundant life.
When we are a praying people we can crucify our fleshly nature with
its passions and live to the glory of god in Christ, who has redeemed
us. Our painful moments for Christ sake is not worth comparing to what
we shall inherit with Him. Let us pray and do His will. Amen, God
Bless you all!!!

1) As christians it is important to get to the heart of God .Our
communication with the almighty one puts us in a place to have a more
intimate relationship with our maker .When we communicate with God he
not only draws us close but we start to change a change that comes
from God and even changes your out look on life and transforms us into
new beings.

2)Like I always say once you get in touch with the almighty God you
want more and the more you get the more intimate your desire is for
closeness with him. However I do realize that there are people who
reject an intimate relationship with the almighty all powerful, all
knowing God.I do however urge my brothers to seek to continue constant
communication with our lord because it is important for our growth
cause like with meditation the more we pray the correct way which is
not just to ask but to listen and receive guidance we start to drop
our will and allow the will of God to be done.

3)I can a test to that there was a time in my life when I chose to run
from God and as a result my life always felt empty and everything used
to make me very depressed and the more things went wrong the more
upset i became and the more depressed I became. However when I did
decide to answer the call of God on my life and fully emerge into his
love and allow him to peel back the layers of my life it proved to be
fruitful.Though this process was difficult cause growing requires us
to go through the fire I am still satisfied with my contineous growth
in him so I would never quit communication with him.

awesome God who desires to commune with us . I mean imagine this
Almighty God wants to take us mere man ,mortal man into his secret
place and for us to dwell there and the way we get to do that is to
ride on the wings of prayer. How awesome.

1. I believe wholeheartedly that “Prayer Changes things” Prayer is so
powerful, not only is it you developing your relationship with God it
also gives you an opportunity to speak to him freely, I often take my
prayer time to thank Him for what he has done and what he is doing
within my life and others. The beautiful thing about this relationship
with my Heavenly Father is that it is so personal just us. If there is
no desire to change within your life prayer is void, but if you have
that desire in your heart to develop your relationship with God and in
turn transform yourself so it’s in line with what God has planned for
you then be prepared for a Glorious transition.
2. When there is no prayer life there is no growth you become somewhat
stagnant or if there are changes they are ones you’ve made for
yourself, and we all know that doesn’t work... However in pursuing a
prayer life you are seeking first the kingdom of God so that all
things be added unto you, added meaning to join or unite as to
increase in size; therefore seeking him first through my prayer life
causes about this change or this transition/transformation. “…seek ye
first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things
shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33
3. This statement here encouraged me to go deeper into what God wants
for me. I do not want to ever think about the should'a, would'a,
coulda’s I want to ensure that my relationship is constantly being
strengthened through prayer; that there is growth and
development;really listening to what God has for me to grow in his
likeness.

1. I completely agree with this statement. We know that prayer is our
way of communicating with God and through that communication he
reveals to us the areas that we need to work on. I know this by
experience; I remember that I went through a stage in my walk with God
where I just didn’t want to hear it, so I avoided prayer at all cost.
One day, when I could not handle it anymore I broke in tears and
prayed, and prayed and I truly felt that freedom that only comes from
God and from that communication with him.
2. This statement goes hand by hand with the example I used on the
first statement. We know that change will occur if (1) we want that
change to happen and (2) we let God change us. If we do want that
change we will look for it through prayer, we will ask for it! The
Bible says that we do not receive because we don’t ask, in order for
us to ask we need to communicate, in other words we need to pray!
3. Very powerful statement! I believe that we all as followers of
Jesus Christ want to enjoy his fullness. Once we have a taste of His
Glory we just want more and more. Prayer is the key to grow in His
likeliness and once we understand this we cannot refuse to pray. When
we have a true desire of enjoying His fullness then as the statement
says everything else is not as important.

Pat,
When reading your post there is a specific phrase that caught my
eye. To pray is to change… our plans for the future. I have a friend
that proudly displays a frame with a message that goes like this” If
you want to make God laugh, tell Him your future plans” when I read
your post I thought of that because it is so true that we make so many
plans and sometimes when we communicate those plans to God, when we
pray, no matter how pretty those plans look to us, God has other plans
for us! Isn’t that wonderful, by know I adjusted and live knowing that
His plans are much better than my plans (Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my
favorite verses  . God bless you sis.

1. My pastor once said, "Yes, prayer changes things but the change is
primarily done in you". Prayer is extremely vital to a Believer and
for ministry. It has the power to change us from the inside out
because prayer is "God's central avenue to transforms us". Sometimes
nothing else will change but because you are a pray-er and you allow
God to daily work in you, you start to produce the change that is
needed for that specific situation.

2. The communication "process". Sometimes I pray the same way so much
that it starts becoming dry and familiar, but I love how in this book
it shows that it is indeed a 'process' and a 'progression'. As I
continue in prayer with God, the communication process between Him and
me becomes better and better abd richer and richer.

3. "To grow in God's likeness results in enjoying his Fullness which
means the priorities of the world began to fade away". The author
stated this option could also be painful. It could be painful because
you might lose some friends, some business relationship, you might not
frequent certain places anymore because of your heart to please God. I
doubt that this will be painful to the Believer though.

1. Bishop Culpepper states and I truly believe that Prayer is the
heartbeat of the church.
It is the fan that brightens the flame - The central avenue with which
we communication that's place between man and God.   We read His word
- trust His Promises - communicate needs/ desires/ pains/failures/
success and longings- remind Him of His grace - wait and listen for
His response.  I think effective prayer fuels a change from our way of
thinking into Christ way of thinking...  It births a need or a desire
to cry out to God for others.   The more we pray, the less selfish we
should become.  The more we pray the more we see the heartbeat of
God...we see Him calling out for us to intercede and to stand in the
gap for His people.

2. Prayer is the one of the means through which we derive true
spiritual intimacy with God... It is the door where we learn how to
truly trust and depend on God... True and effective praying should
take us to the point where listening, silence, communing and waiting
are the norm.  When the pressure of life try to squeeze us into it's
mold the question remain will we trust God or  will we walk away from
Him.  It is in the time of pressure or pain that true dependence is
proven.  When overwhelmed with life circumstances, the psalmist asked
to be led to the Rock who is higher than himself.  He sought refuge
under His wings -  and found strength and security.   It is in this
place of pursuit and security that change, growth and intimacy occurs.
To forsake or to abandon your prayer life at the point of life's
pressures is to cease from truly dependence on God which ultimately
result in a stagnated walk.

 3. No discipline is without pain, but at  the end the rewards of such
far supersedes it's cost.  In developing a truer, deeper and fuller
prayer life, we have to expect a rough and rocky road.  We have to
fight off laziness, pleasure and even the temptation to not prayer.
But once we see that the Lord is giving us an opportunity to enjoy
His presence, we will persist in the painful journey in order to gain
His likeness.  Failure to take such journey always lead to a life of
regret with haunting voice singing, "what
could I become in Christ if I had been willing to endure discipline."

Yes Pat!
I love the last stanza as well, It is really powerful! "To grow in
His likeness is to enjoy His fullness, when this happens, the
priorities of the world begin to fade away." Amen

Darell,
I definitely agree, when we pray, we acknowledge God and His
omnipotent power.

Darell,
I agree with your statement. When we pray, we acknowledge God's
omnipotent power. He desires to do great things with us and through
us, but we must stay in constant communication with Him using prayer.

1. Prayer is communication with God. The more we pray, the more
communication we have with God. This in-turn will force us to do
things that are aligned with God. Just like the more time you spend
with a person, you pick up their habits, speech and behaviors, the
same thing happens when we pray-> we begin to mimic the same habits
and language and please God.

2. Prayer IS one of the best ways to communicate with God. When we
pray, we speak to God letting Him know our thoughts, feelings and
desires. It is also the a way to obtain power. The Bible states that
God has given us power over the enemy. We have to remember to pray and
ask God to give us the power we need to trample all over the enemy.

3. This is so true! Go only has great things in store for us. Keeping
Him at the forefront of our lives will force us to grow in His
likeness and potentially enjoy His fullness. We have to remember that
life is all about choices. Everyday we wake up, we have to remind
ourselves that we chose to follow Christ and therefore must surrender
our own selfish desires. When we do this we experience life as as it
should be rather than reliving memories of what "should have been".

Yes Pat, I agree wholeheartedly. There is power in prayer! It can
change, transform and guide, etc. Myles Munroe reminds us that when we
pray we have the authority to command God and His angles to intervene.
So, despite what the enemy throws at us, we must remember and realize
that there is power in prayer.

darell, i agree with you. Prayer helps us remember and acknowledge
God's mighty power. He holds ALL power in Hid hands, so why not talk
to Him and tell all about your troubles? God cares, and He loves us so
much He wants us to communicate with Him. Why not talk to the one who
created us? He has the best in store for us!
