A. Leadership is setting a new direction or vision for an individual
or a group. It includes guiding them towards a common goal, showing
the way by example and creating an environment in which members feel
actively involved in the entire process. Leadership is not letting
people stay comfortable, allowing their potential to remain dormant.
It is pushing them past their limit and standing with them through
difficult situations that will bring out the best in them. Great
leadership as shown by Jesus, is spending time with those being led,
caring more about who they are becoming instead of what they are
doing. Issues should be addressed as soon as they arise so individuals
can be lovingly restored. Leadership takes guts- being open and honest
so one does not find him/herself ‘leading from behind.’ Emphasis
should be placed on a leader’s consistency so his/her dedication will
not be doubted. It also includes empowering (giving necessary tools to
succeed), motivating and being reliable. (Note that Jesus sent out His
Disciples only after equipping them for service.)
B. The most dramatic difference between Life role leadership and
Organizational leadership is the permanence or lack of it. Life role
leadership is a permanent, continual, forever relationship in which
duty or obligation cannot be easily cast off or ceded. Focused is
placed on passing on values that will cultivate emotional and
spiritual strength as well as trustworthiness. The greatest reward is
that these traits will be passed on from one generation to another.
Organizational leadership role is all about positions and titles and
is only for a time (impermanent). While Life role leadership is not
affected by time, age or circumstance, Organizational leadership is
contingent on the longevity of the job. Due to this fact, the leaders
tend to go in with little feeling attached- “in it to win it” and move
on.
C. St. Matt. 20:25-28 is telling me clearly that importance should not
be placed on the ’position’ but what is being done and what motivates
it. No matter how menial a task is deemed to be, if we do it with
humility, we will stand tall. Feet washing for example, was done by
the least in a group. Jesus, however, abolished the status quo by
doing what no other Rabbi or leader had ever done. As He rightly puts
it ”I came to minister not to be ministered unto.” We are mandated to
lead with a servant heart and as His followers, should be available
for service when and where the need arises. When we surrender all our
habits to Him, whatever we do will be done out of love, not through
self-righteous service. Our aim is not for the spotlight, we do not
use false modesty, not with eye-service as men pleasers but
genuineness of heart. When our lives are patterned off His teaching it
will be easy to serve any and everyone. Where there is a need we will
be willing and ready to serve because true service has become our
lifestyle.
D. Trust is a form of confidence, a sense of belief that someone is
reliable. It is one of the key cornerstones of any relationship and
without it people who have to work together cannot properly function.
When there is trust and an error occurs, on party will quickly dismiss
it knowing that the other will correct and/or restore same. There’s a
spirit of cooperation and concession as both have determined to work
toward mutual goals. Without trust however, the conclusion will be
quickly drawn that sabotage is involved. People, being human are
liable to change. When you expose your vulnerability to someone and
they take advantage of your openness, trust must be rebuilt in order
for it to be gained. I’m a strong believer in brutal honesty: love
someone enough to tell him/her the truth without compromising your
principles. The offender in Christ likeness should speak the truth and
quickly apologize. Contrary to popular belief this does not make you
weak, it makes you human. When confidences are eroded there’s no
transparency and the sense of safety and comfort level is gone.
Instead of building bridges people start to build walls which only
hamper the progress of the job at hand. Imagine soldiers going to
battle and instead of concentrating on the enemy they have to be
worried about friendly fire. If a Disciple messed up Jesus immediately
corrected and restored him to the fold. When we determine who we are
and whose we are, our agendas will be clear as we’re emulating Christ.
Because He has proven Himself to be trustworthy, the entire human
race today has an advocate.
