It triggers the equivalent of "rn -c" which has been trashing .newsrc
files since we changed to the "sucking" system of news. I seem to rember
that it replaces the lisitings of newgroups with a line repeated over and
over dropping out characters each time.

You have mail.
Checking disk usage (the more you have the longer this takes)...
Home dir usage - 92 K - You're under 500 K, that's fine.
Connecting to iris.nyx.net...Done.
Invalid (bogus) newsgroup found: /u/h/r
Unread news in rec.skydiving 13495 articles
Checking out '/u/h/r/hrubin/.newsrc' -- hang on a second...
Moving bogus newsgroups to the end of '/u/h/r/hrubin/.newsrc'.
Delete bogus newsgroups? [ny] n
-nyx10$$
-nyx10$$ cat .newsrc
/u/h/r
/u/h/r
/u/h/r
Here's what I'm finding: (Thanks to Stein Gjoen)
-nyx10$$ grep "rn -c" /nyx/user/lib/zsh/*
/nyx/user/lib/zsh/zlogin: rn -c
I've commented out the offending lines. This should be fixed by now.
Thanks, Terry!!!
