I had a bit of difficulty separating the storyline, because it all revolved around 1 case. B, C and D are more like B1, B2, and B3 in importance.

If I were to break the episode theme into 2 main categories, it would be A. Teamwork and B. 9/11.

Bones  – The Patriot in Purgatory

A Storyline: Identifying the victim and how he died.

B Storyline: Booth’s investment in a fellow veteran.

C Storyline: 9/11 and it’s connection with everyone.

D Storyline: Competition between the interns. Arastu’s wanting to redeem his God. Fisher’s change in attitude within the team.

E Storyline: Brennan’s newfound obsession with basketball and teamwork.

Teaser

1. D – All 5 interns are summoned to the same place at the same time by Brennan.

2. E – Brennan and Booth talk basketball and teamwork in the diner.

3. D – The interns back at Jeffersonian try to impress Brennan.

3.5. D/E – Brennan lectures her interns on teamwork and competition and challenge them to identify as many of the dead people in purgatory as possible.

Act 1.

1. C – The interns are competing with each other; while the others have found the remains of relatively famous missing persons Arastu has found a homeless man.

2. D – Sweets and Booth discuss Brennan’s newfound obsession over teamwork.

3. A/E – Brennan admonishes Arastu over his lack of progress, and he protests that the unidentified victim might be important, and lo and behold, irregularities show up in what remains of the homeless man there are.

4. A/E – Brennan loops Booth into the identification hunt as well.

5. A – The coroner’s report that Booth dug up is useless, but Hodgins discovers from the pictures that the man died on September 21.

6. A/D – The interns work together to realize that they are looking at a victim of 9/11/2001.

Act 2.

1. B – While Brennan and Sweets take into consideration that the “victim” might have actually been an instigator, Booth declares the man to have been a veteran who fought in the Gulf war.

2. C – Camille, Angela, and Hodgins become emotional over 9/11. Camille confesses that she worked as a coroner at NY back then.

3. B – Booth gets worked up over the fact that “one of ours” got “left behind” and asks Ben for a favor.

4. C/D – Interns muse over why/and how the man would have died. The interns also get into an argument, incited by differences in religion and race, mainly Arastu’s being a Muslim. Arastu gets into a tirade.

5. A/B – Booth has identified Tim Murphy and gets emotional, and Brennan comforts him.

Act 3.

1. A – Booth and Brennan meet Tim’s wife, who knew nothing.

2. A – Hodgins discovers they can identify where the victim was standing when he got hit by the debris.

3. A/C/D – Interns get restless over the inability to identify exactly what the veteran was doing at that place and time, and Fisher clears the air by getting each of the interns to confess and say what they were doing at the time of 9/11, Wendell’s uncle was a firefighter who died.

4. A/B – Ben tells Brennan and Booth about Tim Murphy and his odd behavior on the west side of the Pentagon, and how he always yelled “Walk in Moore Park” and fought the security guards whenever he was removed from premises, and how “sometimes things got ugly”.

5. A/D – Fisher gets an idea about examining the personal affects that accompanied the bones.

Act 4.

1. B – Booth looks into every Moore Park, and Sweets tells him not to look into it too much. Then Booth discovers that Murphy’s fellow soldiers were named Walkin, Moore, and Park.

2. A/D – Even more irregularities discovered in the remains (injuries commonly seen in weightlifters, but the victim was too small to be one.)

3. B – Booth explains to Sweets how Murphy petitioned the Pentagon 56 times for silver stars for his fallen comrades.

4. A – 3 different DNA hits have come up from the personal affects.

5. A – First person the DNA belonged to identifies Tim Murphy as her and two other peoples’ rescuer.

6. A/B/D – The interns walk Booth and Sweets through how he bled to death from a lung puncture that was caused by aggravation to the wound when he lifted a weight too heavy for his size.

Act 5.

1. B – Booth speaks at Tim’s official hero’s funeral.

2. C – Brennan gets emotional and explains to Booth how her need for control stemmed from her fear.
