Hello Nicole,

Thanks for your question. The information that Beca Cometa provided you during Beca Cometa webinars is accurate and based on the user experience of our Beca Cometa scholars in the U.S.

We have not recommended students to take partidas de nacimientos or cartas de poder since none of these were necessary for Emilio nor Brigitte when they traveled, enrolled, and created bank accounts in the U.S.

If you and your family decide to listen to additional recommendations made by other members of the NYU community about what additional documents you should take, you are in your right to do so.

We urge all becarios to research and seek guidance from international student advisers on their university campus whenever possible so that you can also receive useful insights from local experts.

sincerely,

Kelly Villanueva

Hi Kelly,

I hope you’re well.

I wanted to ask for your advice regarding the documents we should bring with us to the US. My mother recently saw in a Facebook group for NYU parents that some families are bringing their children’s “partidas de nacimiento” and notarized “cartas de poder” (power of attorney).

In the webinars and training sessions with NYU, we were advised to bring our passports, the I-20, SEVIS fee payment confirmation, our admission letter, and our sponsorship letter. Given the additional documents mentioned in the Facebook group, do you think it would be beneficial to bring the “partidas de nacimiento” and “cartas de poder” as well?

Additionally, are there any other documents you recommend bringing for practical purposes, such as opening a bank account or purchasing a SIM card for our phones once we’re in the US?

Your guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much!

Best regards,

Nicole Zeballos
