There is a lot of confusion about what we are expected to write in our report regarding Mass Spectra. I emailed the TA who is grading this report and pasted her reply to the bottom of this message- it might be helpful for all of us. It seems to me like she does not expect very much, so I won't be spending too much time on it.
Good Luck!
Hi Yonah,
You will not get the MS result of your
own product due to some issues, but you are given some MS results from
previous analyze, you can analyze the results given on blackboard
although these might be different from your compound, identify the main
peak in the MS result and briefly talk about it in several sentences.
Additionally, you also need to talk about your own reaction, whether it
is successful or not and why.
Best,
Xiaoyan

Dear Dr. Cui,
I'm writing my lab report on Experiment 7, but I'm not sure what we are
expected to do with the Mass Spectra. In the hand out it says "You will
not be required to analyze the MS in detail, but will be given it to
confirm the identity of your final compound". I was told that this year
we are expected to deal with it differently, but we were not told
clearly what we should do instead. I asked some of the TA's during my
lab session, and three different TA's told me three different things. I
asked some of my friends what they would be doing, but they all were not
sure.
So what exactly are we expected to include in our report
regarding mass spectra? Which specific questions should we be trying to
answer?
Thanks,
Yonah
