Hi Everyone,
The upcoming lab practical exam carries plenty of weight towards our final grade and I feel like it's hard to prepare because there is no textbook or sample test to study from. Therefore, I put together a few things that might be helpful....
Good Luck!
-- This short powerpoint summarizes most of the 'testable' material. It also has photos of the microscope slides that we are expected to recognize. (Nobody enjoys memorizing such things, but on last exam this was worth many points.)
(If this link doesn't work for you, you can email me and I'll send it to you directly.)
--These two videos of fetal pigs are helpful:
--My instructor is the one who writes the tests (Michael Carrozza) and he said that the differences between the fetal pig and mature pig circulation would certainly come up on the test. Fritz gave me a quick summary:
(Thanks, Fritz!)
Placenta -> umbilical vein -> ductus venosus (inside the liver) -> caudal vc
The umbilical vein and ductus venosus direct oxygenated blood from the placenta to the heart. In an adult these fibrose and become the ligamentum teres and the ligamentum venosum, respectively.
Foramen ovale - this is a hole in the septum of the heart that links the right and left atria. It causes some blood to bypass the fetal lungs. In the adult it fibroses to the fossa ovalis.
Left ventricle -> pulmonary artery -> ductus arteriosus -> aorta
The ductus arteriosus shunts blood away from the nonfunctional lungs and into the systemic circulation. Becomes the ligamentum arteriosum in the adult.
