Using GeoNames to Query NYT

So I have a list of Geonames and i was hoping to use them to query the NYT Article Search API. I was curious as to the best way to do this? How should I build my query?
Do I put the Geoname city and country in a geo_facet search or a nytd_geo_facet search? Do I use the city and country name in a straight up keyword search? what is the best way to do this?

My end goal is to get all the recent articles written about a specific place, I dont care the topic etc.
