In June 2010, St. Michael Academy in Manhattan was forced to close
less than a year after winning the Federation girls Class AA
basketball tournament. A sharp drop in enrollment during the recession
was blamed.

Most of underclassmen from that school's varsity and JV teams followed
coach Apache Paschall to Nazareth Regional H.S. in Brooklyn, which
scored the Federation championship last March in Albany.

Paschall died of cardiac arrest last month, and now the Nazareth
players have received more stunning news. School officials announced
Wednesday that Nazareth will also be shutting its doors, effective in
June, because of low enrollment.
