Hi,
I like the Open Senate project quite a bit. Is there any chance of getting an Open Assembly project going as well?

Nate,

A few years ago, Andrew Hoppin and I met with some technology leaders from the Assembly.  We profiled our open source/open data projects, and offered to work with them to implement similar projects for the Assembly.

While they were excited about our progress (and I still keep in touch with one of their managers), I believe their focus is more on internal support for their members.

I can provide you with contact information for the Assembly if you wish to pursue this.

Hi,
I have a few questions that I hope you might help me answer. How up-to-date is the information in the OpenLegislation section of the Senate's website?  How quickly do actions on bills get added? It looks like Assembly actions are included as well as Senate actions. Is that correct? And finally, does the feed of recent actions include introductions, or is there another way to track new introductions through OpenSenate?

Thanks for your time!

Nate

All information on OpenLegislation (including actions for both Senate and Assembly) is generally updated within 5 minutes of publishing. That's different than 5 minutes after it happens, generally not too different though. Someone else might be able to provide more insight into reasons for occasional delays in publishing.

There is no "bill introduced" action. There are various actions relating to amending and substituting bills though. For newly introduced bills your best bet is to sort bills by most recent updates and look for bills with only one action. Not a great solution by any measure but the application isn't currently designed for that use case. I'll put it in as a feature request, no promises though.

Thanks. So bills show up in OpenLegislation when they get their first referral to a committee?

Bills show up when any part of the bill is published with some minimal level of information always available. Off hand, I would say required information includes title, number, and sponsor. I am not sure if the initial committee referral is guaranteed to be there but I can say that I don't think I've ever seen a bill with out it.
