We’re starting the more/less formal process to select a base theme for WebNY as we move forward. And I have permission to open the process to the rest of the state (even potentially the theme sprint, although the criteria to join is strict), thus this list.
WebNY is starting development of the Drupal Toolkit. First on the agenda is the selection of a base theme to use for the toolkit and sites built in the future that will be supported by WebNY. From this base theme, we will develop a family of subthemes that support the currently evolving NYS Branding for websites.
There is no shortage of possible base themes for Drupal. Our team has identified 4 strong potential base themes to evaluate. If you would like weigh in on the potential base themes go to a 2 question survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/566FZ2Q and vote no later than close of business on Tuesday, August 4th.
We are also soliciting your suggestions for what criteria we should be using to evaluate the base themes being considered. As examples, we have identified a few:
· Does the theme have both Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 versions?
· Are the Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 versions “compatible” (e.g. how hard would it be to maintain a subtheme for both)
· What level of Panels integration/support does the theme have?
· How many open issues are there?
· How long are issues open on the average?
· Any “paid” support options?
· Does the theme generate WCAC 2.0 AA accessible HTML?
If you can think of additional criteria we should be using to evaluate base themes, join the Yammer conversation at https://www.yammer.com/itsexternalcollaborations/#/Threads/show?threadId=567204883. We’ll need your input by close of business on Wednesday, August 5th.
Finally, if you would like participate in the theme selection sprint, head to https://www.yammer.com/itsexternalcollaborations/#/Threads/show?threadId=567203631 and read the participation criteria carefully. If you think you can qualify/commit the time necessary, please leave your name in that thread or email Tim Crommie.
