to Friendship Garden
Good Evening,

Laura and I just got back from the new Community Garden in East Harlem
sponsored by Target. It's very, very modern, and quite spacious! I
don't know if one can really compare the Target Garden to the
Friendship Garden, because they both have their own way of
"popping!"

Unfortunately, it decided to rain quite hard at times, with pretty
decent wind gusts, but that really didn't spoil the celebration.

When we got there, they had a group of women singing do-wop songs of
the 60's, and you can see right off the contemporary design that they
came up with above the fence, coming about 4 feet from the fence over
the sidewalk.

Going in, there are tables in the front on a fine gravel. Keep going
back and you will feel the brand new sod still trying to take hold.
On each side there are large flower beds from front to back. In the
back, you will see a small boardwalk that has it's own tables, and 4
ft x 4 ft planter boxes all the way in the back with more exotic (but
strong) plants.

All in all, it was very nice! Target was giving out herbs in your own
keepsake terracotta mug, as well as their brand of flavored water
(quite good!), ice cream (delish!), and 5 varieties of popcorn (Oh my
GOD!!!!).

I am really looking forward to seeing that Garden after the sod takes
hold (you could tell it hadn't by the "squishiness" of it under you
feet, but it looked good!), and when it's not raining!

I took as many pictures as I could, but again, our elusive founder,
Miss Bette Midler, left before I could ask her for a picture.....
(I'll get to her at the next one, I hope..... depending if I can get
through the news folks!)

Angela - I'm not sure if you folks took pictures, I wasn't able to get
a lot, but I took some when it wasn't raining too hard... let me know
if you want them!

Take care all, and good night,

- Matthew
