From Ben:
This could be a similar use case to LC... basically pulling general NYPL NYC historical content (photos, menus, other collection) into a temporal-spatial tagging interface that the public could work with. Starting with stuff that already has decent (though not normalized) time/place metadata so it's a high-relevance pile to sift through.

Problem is that until the library reopens (or even, worst case, a little after), all those data assets are offline. We have some exports of the metadata, but the actual images and stuff are currently down (like the map server).

So we may need to think up some hacking scenarios that are not dependent on library data... maybe some front-facing services, like rebuilding the digitizer in Leaflet.. something we'd been discussing.

Matt, Dave and I are looking into the feasibility of some of Labs joining a Brooklyn-based hack day tomorrow at wherever y'all are holed up. Would you be able to accomodate four more?

Ben

Why not Ghostmap with the map we already have in Heroku (which will later be replaced with a more relevant one if that one is not useful) with Leaflet-based tracing?

- User is presented with a zoomed-in map with some visible polygons to be linked to people (not all buildings have polygons on top)
- User is also presented with a list of people who probably lived in that area (based on OCR)
- User can either:
- - associate a person to an existing polygon
- - create a missing polygon regardless of there being a person or not
- - associate a person to a point (because user does not want to draw a polygon)
- - correct an error in the OCR

Behind the scenes we keep track via cookies (or some very rudimentary or simple to code process) of who does what for some point system to be defined.

Do we need NYPL assets for this?

We certainly don't need NYPL assets for that. And it gets us pretty far on the road to gazetteer authoring as well as rebuilding the digitizer and seems relatively doable over two or three days.

Team Topomancy - what do you think?

Don't we still need the assets on Paul's computer (the 1854 address directory, OCR and derivative images)?

We're still trying to get an answer on whether we can get into the building to retrieve that.

Assuming we can solve that problem, does this seem like a good plan to everyone?

Topo team: what's the status of the gazetteer database?

BTW I tried to log in to my machine in the office and it is offline. It would be a matter of turning it on. Maybe someone already there can press that button?

The machine is offline because the network is offline. All network infrastructure is offline. If we were to get anything, someone would have to go on a run into Manhattan tomorrow AM and we'd have to be sure the library would let us in.

But I'd be happy to do it.

I'm in big agreement with Mauricio on this plan by the way. I think it really leverages our mutual moments of inspiration into a public web app that helps us create links between and among data points... I think it would be a hit too.

Shekhar and I touched base a little while ago. They won't be able to confirm hosting a Brooklyn hack day until tomorrow morning. Space is mainly the issue I think. The Topo crew is at Shekhar's brother's place, which is at or near capacity due to folks being home from work.

We should think about backup options, preferably in Williamsburg because I think that would minimize shlepping for most folks.

In any event, plan to check email by 9:30am or so to see what plan has emerged.

Thanks for bearing with. This is truly an unusual situation!

Would make sense if we all had a way out there.  Let's hope for positive news from NJ Transit.

I can also drive 4 people somewhere besides Williamsburg if need be.

We can meet tomorrow at 64 Herbert St in Williamsburg after, say, 9:30 or so. Let us know if any of you are interested and even we can expect you.

Splendid! Should we say 11ish? Dave, you and I can figure out picking up machines. Paul, Mauricio, let us know if there's any particular instructions on which gear to pack up.

Lunch, and dinner if we're still working, are on Labs! And I'll bring some Halloween candy.

Woot!

I have to admit I'm quite upset with Sandy for stranding me in NJ. Would love to join, but will have to join via Skype or otherwise.

Good deal. You can expect four from Labs (Mauricio, Paul, Dave, myself) starting around 11am. Also sending a note to Aaron Cope on the off-chance he wants to swing by. If it gets crowded I can retreat to a nearby coffee shop. I'll be spending the bulk of the time trying to finish writing an article.

Gang, for logistical reasons, let's meet at the Blue Stove, a coffee shop at 415 Graham Avenue, cross Withers, at 11am. We can walk to the house Tim and I are staying at from there. Please let me know if anyone can't make it then or has any questions or issues. Cheers!

Hey all, I may be at Blue Stove more like 11:30. Text me if you've already moved on.

FYI: Paul has heroically biked to the library to retrieve computers. Mauricio, he should have yours as well.

See you soon,
