Hello,

I wished to report out on a situation we're currently dealing with
regarding specific riders using our public transportation system. I am
sure that this isn't anything unique to our area and am hoping that
there may be other individuals out there that may have had to deal
with a similar situation and may be able to reflect on or offer
guidance to address this situation.

Our situation is we have a regular rider on our system that, because
of issues relating to their personal hygiene, emanates a repulsive
odor which is affecting other riders' perception and use of our
system.

We have already kindly suggested to this individual that it would be
in everyone's best interests that he takes better care of himself but
any offers of help and suggestions have not been heeded. I was hoping
that perhaps someone else may have some prior experience in addressing
a similar situation that could help with advice to us in our
situation.

What specifically we are looking for is any specific, measureable
guidance and or ruling which we may be able to incorporate within our
rider code of conduct that would be fair and equitable to any riders
on the system.

Please share any thoughts, experiences, and/or helpful suggestions in
response to this post.

Thank you!

Larry:
We have had a few such situations and dealt with them as follows. Our first
step is to discreetly take the passenger aside as you have already done.
When this fails we have had some success contacting area Offices for Aging
or Mental Health to inquire if the person in question is known to them and
if they are assigned a particular case worker. When the passenger is known
and there is a case worker they have usually been able intercede to help
address the problem. One or both of these two steps have usually worked
pretty well.

We did have one extreme case about a year ago when an elderly passenger
wanted to use the bus but had visibly soiled their clothes. In the interest
of public health we did take the step of denying that person service until
they had properly cleaned themselves up.

Hope this is helpful

As an advocate I'd say it's this simple. Kindly, tell that passenger(s)-if they don't come on board-neat and clean-they'll simply be turned away- as this is offensive to the other riders and drivers.
