As many of you have heard, during the Armond Bassett race, Mike Skivington suffered a heart attack while on the water. The paddlers at the race that day showed that they are true sportsmen. They immediately came to his aid without concern for their own races. Several paddlers carried Mike up the bank where help was flagged down and an ambulance was called. Thanks to the prompt response of the canoe racing community, Mike is now in good hands and recovering quickly.

He sent this note of thanks to all of the paddling community.

To all my fellow paddlers
Where does one begin to express the help, good wishes, and support that i received during my recent health episode? I am humbled by your concern and be assured that it has been an inspiration to me during recovery. A stent has been placed in my artery and my doctor indicated that a complete recovery can be accomplished. A big reason for this is the incredible help that I received from my fellow paddlers.

The paddling community is made up of a great group of people who love the sport and are supportive of each other. I feel lucky to be a small part of it and feel blessed that you folks looked out for me.

Thank-you,
Mike

Do to the medical emergency, at the race and everyone's willingness to stop and help as needed, Armond Bassett was suspended/halted. At the Electric City NYMCRA board meeting, it was decided that all participants will be awarded 4th place points in all classes. We have also added the St. Regis race to the points race schedule. This will be a complete NYMCRA points race except for the pro racers.

The Forge Financial Advisors Pro Point Series will finish up with the Wells Bridge pro race in August, we will use the 5 other events and the average of 4th for the Armond Basset event. We believe this is a great solution to the unfortunate event that happened in Rochester. On a positive note the overwhelming support of the paddlers in support of a fellow paddler in need was an awesome sight!

Finally , the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Ausable River Canoe Marathon is set to go in less than two weeks. A number of teams from NY and surrounding states are preparing to head west over the next few days. We wish all NYMCRA paddlers good luck in their endeavours through the night!
